Egr delete corolla diesel benefits

Good afternoon,

I would like to know if installing a blanking plate on a 1990 1c diesel engine egr would delete the egr and if i would see benefits such as better mpg.

The mechanic said the egr is better for engine and does not seem too willing to remove it. Is this egr vacuum operated? it does have what looks like a vacuum hose connected to it. If this is indeed a vacuum hose can i disconnect it to disable egr valve, i know egr blank plate would be best in case egr valve is leaky.

Mechanic said that the egr valve opens at aound 80 km/h to let exhaust gases into intake.

We never had EGR on Japanese diesels sold here, but the same engine in imported ones had EGR. We deleted every EGR we could find. EGR fills up the intake manifold with nasty goop.
 
You will receive slightly better MPG's but will generate more NOx which is among other things a source of ground level ozone.

Higher combustion temps = more NOx. EGR lowers combustion temps.
 
My early 1980s Mercedes Turbodiesels have EGR. No reason why this wouldn’t.



Agree. It will have slightly higher NOX, but much less soot in the intake, and better power.
depends if his car is US spec or rest of the world. EGR didn't become a thing there until mid nineties
 
You can pull the hose and block it, but it is preferable to blank it completely. Make a plate to block it, but sometimes these will burn through, so sometimes I'd drop a bolt into the pipe and weld it in...no going back then, but who'd want to.
 
I disconnected the egr vacuum hose and it feels more responsive to me or i am a feeling the placebo effect maybe? Anyways it is better for engine life so i will get blanking plate made for it. Emissions is yearly here, sp i will leave the blanking plate so that it is remobable in case it it does not pass emsission. How thick would blanking plate need to be so it does not burn out?
It does not appear to have an egr cooler according to diagram.

It is just a simple pipe from exhaust to intake with a vacuum operated egr valve. It is better to blank the egr valve intake side, the exhaust manifold side or both?

Blank it off right at the manifold. 1/4" should be plenty i would say. Not sure of the thickness but used two peic3s of aluminum sheeting to do a black off on the exhaust manifold of my gas 4.2L. Years later it still works fine.
 
What material should the plate be? Sheet metal? aluminum? Stainless steel?

I also see there is a hose that goes from the head to air filter hose. Is this the pcv hose? Is it a good idea to reroute it so it does not vent into the air filter hose?

Not alloy, as I said, 2mm plate...stainless would be ok. You can put the breather into a bottle or catch tank if too much oil is coming out. Once the EGR is blanked the oil coming through isn't much of a problem, mixing with EGR is what makes the gunk.
