Effective bird deterrent

I have a tomato patch and birds come and poke several holes in my tomatoes. I don't want to buy a plastic raptor or an elaborate scarecrow.
Any suggestions on effective bird deterrents?

A scarecrow or a 22 rifle, aluminum pie plates help swinging on a string

At first blush of red,harvest your tomatoes. Store them in a tightly enclosed paper sack with another ethylene ripening gas , such as a few apples or bananas. After a week or so they should ripen without the damage incurred from leaving them exposed on the vine.

Hi vava, big fan of your posts. I’ve had mixed results with tomato netting. Jersey birds are very aggressive. They’re attracted by sight and smell. And just to bust your chops they’ll stick a hole in your prize tomato and leave you wondering..where has that beak been before last night?? Gotta toss it!

That's very kind of you. Stainless steel wire mesh then! That'll be too tough to chew through even for those tough Jersey birds!

I have MANY green tomatoes that have gaping holes in them

I can send this solution to you. And his mate.

They have frequented our property and the surrounding area for the past two years.

And,

a. They don’t like tomatoes

b. They don’t take prisoners

Try sprinkling some powdered lime on the fruit.

I’ve given up. Like I said. 73 years old. There’s always a farmers market. The produce looks great.

go get one of them big plastic owls and stick it on a pole,did this at work on our cooling towers to keep pigeons away,seemed to work
