Ecore & Saturn: No oil pressure...

I was changing my oil today using Valucraft Ecore 3614 filter from Autozone and Rotella T 15w40.

Fired up the engine and the oil pressure light stayed on. (*** !?!) I tried revving the engine a little bit then the lifters started to tick. I took the filter out and there was no oil flowing though it. The center was still oil free...

I was thinking maybe the oil is a little thick although, I was using Delvac 1300 15w40 with a ST non-ecore filter.

I put the old filter back on and got oil pressure again.

Now... Whatcha think? I think the combination of Ecore filter and thicker oil caused this problem. I think if i was using 5w30, this wouldn't have happened...? I use thicker oil because it's a Saturn...and you should know the rest.

Well, your engine's okay ..so cut it open and let's see the malfunction. This will set a new "1st" for a filter failure.

The NO FLOW condition. eyesgotstano

I mentined awhile back that we received a 3614 E-core that was manufactured with the ADBV blocking the outlet of the filter. This may be the cause. The one we had the valve was way off center and hanging down into the outlet hole. Upon startup it would have forced the valve up against the baseplate and blocked oil flow.
 
I change my own oil all the time and this is a first...
I tried 2 ecores and got no pressure.

After taking out the old filter and putting the new ecore back on, the pressure came back.

This is my first time using a ecore and i was shocked when the oil pressure light didn't turn off. I immediately thought these filters were no good. I never had this problem with the older design.
 
If you still have the E-cores, call the number for Champ from the thread at the top of the page. Tell them what happened. They will send you a filter retrieval kit and let them test the filters. They will send you a service report back.

Speaking of Motorcraft filters, anyone know the AC Delco PF-52 equivalent in Motorcraft? I think the new Ecore AC 52s are about to emerge & I want to switch to Motorcraft's threaded-end valve system. I'm avoiding the Ecores until I start seeing some good photos of used ones.
 
For all the people who are anti Ecore oil filter, why not just buy a Purolator for $2.49

Are you saying that, although this was the first time using an ecore, you went through two of them (that I assume you bought together) before you put back the original filter??

and then you put an ecore on (one of the same two)..and it worked??

If this is correct ..then the ecores you have (one of them at least) is on the care and functioning as far as you know it????

Absolutely not. The Fram has all the element you guys don't like in an e-core but with poorer quality and other problems.
 
Just a guess, It seems like the unprimed oil pump had trouble pumping oil pass the new ADBV design.

I used 2 ecores before i went back to the old filter(I'm glad i didn't have plans to cut it open). After the oil pump was primed, the ecore worked just fine.

That's always an option as is Napa.

People who change their own oil and filter are dyi'ers.

Those people take their business where they think that the local auto parts store is or has been the most helpful. This equates to product knowledge.

So some dyi'ers are purchasing from their favorite store who happen to sell the E-core filter under various labels. I would suspect that the individual store offers at least one additional filter brand choice. So the dyi'er is making his/her own choice of brand to use for their vehicle.

Or if a consumer goes to a lube shop, the lube shop primarily features one brand but may have an alternate if you ask for an additional charge. Or you can always bring your own filter of choice with you..as I do.
