My dad has owned Ford trucks his entire life, and yet it somehow took us 2 hours to do the job. Drilled a new drain plug as well. This is the first trans service in the 18 months that I've owned the truck. It shifts flawlessly and imperceptibly through all gears now. Questions though:

1) I came to the party with only 2 cases, 12 quarts, of Castrol Mercon V. Daddio informed me that this was a 16qt ordeal. I bought 4 quarts of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic ATF($10/qt!) to make the number. Any possible negative implications of mixing the two flavors of oil?

2) Even though we drained all the oil and added 16, I'm overfilled by at least two quarts. Are there negative implications to having too much fluid in the E40D? It's no biggie to drain it, I'm just lazy.

3) Lost a single pan bolt in the process and no one seems to know what size it takes. Not listed in the RockAuto.com database either. Any ideas where I may procure a single bolt for the trans pan?

Max overfill is usually 1 pint. 2 quarts over can definitely do damage. You probably shouldn't drive it until you can drain off the excess. Too much fluid causes foaming, and foam doesn't lubricate.

Drain it. Some transmissions are very picky about being overfilled.

As far as the bolt, the dealer should be able to get you one quickly; or you can head to the hardware store with another of the pan bolts, and match it up.

Drain 2-3 quarts and warm/drive it to normal operation temp and check level according to how to check transmission fluid level in operation manual. Add as needed to get to correct level. Go to the dealer and get a bolt. Probably cheap and im sure their techs lose them fairly often too
