We got a card in the mail last week informing us our computer is covered in a big E-Machines class action wazzit. Result- *If* all else is approved, after sending in info(already sent),should get certificate for either:
1. $60-odd bux ca$h(woopty!)
*Or*:(here's the interesting part)
2. Computer &/or accessories, up to $36x.00 worth, w/ 2 BIG restrictions.
2A. Stuff has to be E-Machines or Gateway or Acer brand.
2B. Stuff must be ordered from Secondipity dot com.

Still, since the *Old*(10 yr+) computer badly needs replacing, & I expected nothing, this could work out very well indeed. Secondipity has new & refurb stuff, seems geared toward achools, & has been around awhile. If this goes thru, will probably get a laptop, Acer or Gateway.

All relevant, helpful suggestions & comments welcome.

I have one Acer new with Vista and two Emachines refurbs running Windows 7. Hardware wise they have been flawless. The Emachines are small form factor. The refurbs where purchased at local Micro Center. The HDMI one came with Office 2010 starter which is about all I need for work documents. For less than $200 a piece Emachines have been great price vs performance. I noticed Micro Center staff recommending Acer products since they make there own hardware.

By comparison I have had a lot of Dells in past. Like Dells website for driver updates. Acer takes a more spartan approach.

Someone turned in an eMachines SFF computer at work a year or two ago for recycling. I rescued it before it made it to "the bin", and took it home. I restored Windows XP on it and it runs fantastic. I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB; it has a decent size Toshiba HDD and an AMD Athlon 64 bit processor. It sits on my daughter's desk and runs her little internet games very well. It'd easily work for any light duty home computing use.

I'm impressed with it. Certainly for the price paid...but even bought new, they appear to be a good value.

I got an emachines on black friday 2003. I'm still using its celeron CPU and XP license. Everything else has been replaced.

Mobo and PS blew simultaneously, apparently how it usually goes down. I found a new HP mobo that took the weird socket celeron on ebay for $12 and was cruising again. But the emachines rescue disks hated the non emachine bios so I had to hack XP to get back where I should have been.

Checked my model number, not in the class. Thanks for the hassle!

Nothing wrong with Acer laptops really. I'm quite happy with my Aspire V3. AMD Trinity A8-4500M, 15.6" screen. I upgraded it withy 8GB of Mushkin RAM and a 500GB Seagate Hybrid Drive and it's great. It's been pretty darn reliable too.

Dude, haven't you had that thing less than a year? LOL! Get back to me when it is outside of warranty

My PC I'm using currently is a old Emachines PC,goin on close to 10 years now with it running XP with no hardware issues, etc.

Let us know the outcome of this.

Some of the early eMachine were build horribly and were unreliable, and the brand was ruined forever after, even when they clean up their act.

The E folks used to skimp on power supplies. I have one with an upgraded supply which has given years of day in day out service. On the older units, almost any aftermarket supply is better than what "E" put in it.

I bought 2 cheap eMachines in the past and got 2 of the cards in the mail. I have not had either machine for at least 8 years. I remember the power supplies conking out on at least one if not both. I have a small form factor emachine E1333-03W desktop that I'm using now that seems to work OK.

I look forward to getting something, but not sure what. I have a XP Westinghouse laptop now. I got rid of a bunch of computer stuff last summer. But I was given an old Dell XP laptop of my daughter's and a Dell XP desktop by my sister. So the computers are starting to multiply..............

So I take it you can get Ipads and stuff as well..........

Anyone have the site where I can check my model number to see if I qualify with my E-machines that I purchased in 08? Would greatly appreciate the help!

My bad, I found the website & do not qualify with my computer. I know it came with Windows Vista & I had ALL SORTS of issues from day one. Blue screen of death constantly after the 1st year of course!! Finally had it wiped clean & installed Windows 7 with Kaspersky Anti Virus. Knock on wood--no issues since!! Vista was "horrible!!"

Update: "only" 6 months have gone by since my first post. Here's what's happened.

Since the 1st letter mentioned a court decision to come in March 2013 & heard little about it, figured it might all come to nothing. What info I found in the Inet seemed to indicate the settlement had final approval but sounded pretty wishy washy.

More months passed. Big changes occurred at home. Still nothing. Even though I'd told him there might be a free computer in my future, Brother in CA refurbed the nice Dell Latitude E4300 laptop for me & it arrived July 2.

Finally got a letter on July 15 or 16. Had code #'s & correction to needed website- *Not* secondipity as in 1st letter, but: emachinesredeem.com . Original amounts held though: $62.50 ca$h, or credit for computer/acc up to $365 total. A real no-brainer for me. And yes, if you wanted one of the more expensive models listed, you could pay the difference between it & the $365 credit.

1st I looked at laptops, was gonna ask Bro's opinion on a couple- but they disappeared within a couple of hours. What's in stock changes daily, hourly, by the minute. Especially the little 13" screen 3 lb Acer models, at prices under/near $365. Also, all laptops I looked at were refurbs/"light use" models.
I'd ck several times a day for over a week, sometimes over 30 models available at various prices up to over $1000, sometimes only 5 or 6 models listed. Like I said, they came & went.

Then I thought- this is silly, I HAVE a nice laptop, good as/better than anything I could get for "free". A good fast desktop with a BIG HD would make more sense. So a few days ago I started looking seriously at desktops, almost all of those listed are Gateway brand- and wonder of wonders, some are brand new, *Not* refurbs. A couple disappeared while I waffled, but last night I picked one & ordered. A small-footprint brand-new Gateway desktop, model SX2380-UR22, with AMD quad core 3.4GHz processor, Windows 8 64-bit, 1 TB HD- price on it was $340. Gateway's MSRP is $499.

I got to pay sales tax of $26.xx, & it listed $9.99 shipping, so it looked like about $12 extra I'd have to pay. But at the very last of the order process it dropped the ship charge.

Still didn't come out free though. I had to pay a grand total of a buck thirty-four. Yup. $1.34.

Order confirmation email today said it should arrive mid-August, I forget the exact dates listed. And tonight it shows to be sold out.

They actually shipped it out when they said they did, & UPS tracking says it'll be here tomorrow. Gonna have to clear off the tabletop! I'll continue to use the old CRT monitor, maybe someday get a cheap used flatscreen to go with it. BTW- Bro in CA has an AMD quad-core in his home desktop & says this SX2380-UR22 model should *fly* running Win 8.

We'll see when it arrives- but so far this EMachines replacement business seems to be 100% legit & going well. Will post again when I get it all set up & running.

Glad you are getting something you can use. I have my old Westinghouse laptops XP win from 2005. I also have another Dell XP win my daughter did not want. I gave the Dell to my brother.

I ordered an Acer S7 laptop with gorilla glass win 8. It has a touchscreen and the thickness is about the same as the lid on my old laptop. Pretty amazing...... I got the certificates (2) and researched and ordered the laptop the next night. I was afraid everybody was going to wipe out stock. I thought it was odd they switched websites as well.

Mine had shipping and the shipping was gone at the end when I went to pay? Mine came a lot quicker than they said it would. Now I just have to figure out how to use Win 8......

I payed $269 + the $720 in credit It has Raid 256 SSD hard drive, touch screen, HD etc. I payed the extra to get a little more thinking it will last me a long while. I'm really happy so far. It looks brand new for a refurb. Only downside is 3 mth warranty... But it should be OK. Crosses fingers.

That Gateway looks very similar to the eMac SFF computer in my daughter's room, though obviously with much more under the hood. Nice score, and good luck with it!
