Hello all -

The dealer put dye in the motor oil to track down a slow leak. Oil is M1 synthetic and has 8500 miles & about 2 years. The dye has been in there for about 13 months.

I'd like to send a sample to Blackstone Lab for an analysis. Do you know if dye can influence the analysis in anyway?

Thanks!

I once had high silicon in a UOA after using dye. I don't know if the dye was the cause, but I never found any other cause. I'd be curious if anything unusual shows up on yours.

Thanks fellas.

I just spoke with Blackstone and they said it should be okay... just note it on the slip. So I'll be sending a sample out soon.

Re: dye disappearing
The dye the dealer used is quite hard to see. Using a white LED flashlight, I can see the color is yellow but under sunlight it's almost invisible. The dealer tech said they use black lighting for this dye.

Leak detection dyes are oil soluble dyes that fluoresce under a UV light. These dydes are often used in air conditioning refrigerant oils for leak detection as well.

I doubt this kind of dye would affect an oil analysis.
