IDK, German Castrol was originally green here. I've read about most German oils, synthetic or not, being green in WWII. Maybe they're not all green but I thought that was associated with German oils.

If you are 100% sure... Put some heating oil (dyed red...at least here in EU) into modern diesel powered car and report what will happen with its piezzo injectors

But that particular oil is dyed for the purpose of leaving a trace of dye in the fuel tank hoses and so on. So an inspector can see you used illegal high sulphur fuel.



Same thing here in the US. If you get caught using "offroad" diesel, you can be fined for the taxes based on your mileage on the odometer at the time. A old coworker of mine's pickup got tested (after he ticked off a cop) and had to pay the back taxes assuming he had used that then entire 280,000 miles of the truck. Lesson learned!

The factory I worked in before retiring, switched over to Castrol products for their industrial lubricants. The ones I used or was around all had a green tinge to them.

I recall that the Supertech synthetic oil I used some years ago was almost clear, similar to vegetable oil. Most oils, at least American ones, are mostly a shade of brown. Additives>

Here in NJ, apparently, the red dyed "off road" diesel and regular, un-dyed on-road diesel are exactly the same fuel. The red just isn't taxed at the same rate. I've heard that in other states the red-dyed oil has much higher sulphur content. I didn't know that Europe has a similar system.

Is there any known problems with dye in engineoil. Is there any known problems with oil passages or filters clogging, or any other problems? I know ATF it dyed red. But I have never seen dyed Engineoil.

Most all lubricants are dyed with an Oil-Soluble "analine" dye.

The sulphur is reduced from the off road diesel as well. It's just a tax thing for the dye these days.
 
Speaking of UV dyes, one of the more common ones is fluorescene. It has a yellow to bright green color in solution depending on concentration(and ambient light) and is a vivid green under UV. It is visible at TINY concentrations. At work, I may add it to a largish volume of liquid(20L or better) and just a few crystals of solid are enough to impart a noticeable color. I might also spend months fighting to get any residual out of that container.

Most organic dyes(I speak as a chemist when I say organic) are dyes and/or fluorophores due to extensive conjugation that allows relatively "free" movement of electrons in π orbitals. To give a sort of hand-waving explanation, this allows electrons to be more easily promoted to higher energy levels and depending on the extent of conjugation this promotion results in an absorbtion of a photon of a specific energy which directly correlates to a color(it can happen anywhere in the UV to near-IR range). Multiple conjugated systems can result in multiple absoprtion bands. Depending on functionalization and size, they can be either lipid soluble(which would make them dissolve easily in oil) or water soluble or somewhere in between. Many transition metal complexes are vividly colored, and it's also possible that if one is used as an additive it can

And, speaking of specifics, current Brad Penn(Kendall) is dyed a sort of bright green color.

Great input. Also to add, the very thing that makes them good dyes (the conjugated, delocalised electron clouds) also make them pretty unstable in terms of oxidation, so they don't last long in the engine. Plus any soot or other finely-divided particles that get into the used oil do a great job of absorbing light (hence why oil goes black, especially diesel engine oil).
