So someone mentioned excess glue on a filter. I noticed that several of the Wix filters I bought had bits of stray glue that seemed to be from the seal between the baseplate and the can. No big deal.

However, the other thing I noticed about a lot of filters is that sometimes they're coated with all sorts of stuff. Sometimes it's cardboard int flaking off from the inside of the box. I've seen gaskets that were covered with talc. I guess more worrisome would be excess metal shavings from the mounting threads (saw that on a few Fram OCOD).

I'm sure there's other stuff that gets inside a filter. I'll try and at least wipe off the mounting threads. There are minute amounts of stuff that might get filtered out once the oil starts flowing. I know it's probably nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I will literally wait 45 minutes for the oil to drain, so seeing this stuff just bugs me.

At the very least, a lot of import brand filters are shrink wrapped. The OEM Subaru filters I bought came in a sealed box and with the base of the filter shrink wrapped. An NPN knockoff I bought tries the same method. I saw a stack of Honda OEM filters at a dealer this morning, and the were completely shrink wrapped - no box. I'm wondering why more filters don't come shrink wrapped. And with some people switching filter contents, why not seal the boxes?

Bulk filters that are available without individual boxes (retail style) will be plastic wrapped. These are all stuck in a cardboard box (6-12 at a time)and are meant for dealership/chain style oil change outlets.
