If you read my post under the "Diesel Oil" section, you know I've got a new Duramax I want to take care of.

I've done searches, but I'd still like some current feedback as to what the real story is with fuel additives. Are they beneficial in a diesel such as this one? Power Service is always available in my area, and it seems to work well for cold weather issues, but is it a quality product?

Thanks!

mountravlr,
I think Schaeffer's #131 Neutra fuel additive (or #192 Neutra including cetane booster) beats Essentialube both in performance and price. Schaeffer's #137 Diesel Treat beats Neutra in price.

coyotekid,
Expect 3-5% fuel savings from the better additives, plus additional lubricity to extend the life of the fuel injection system. Also, antigel additive in #2-D gives better mileage that blending #1-D & #2-D for winter (#1-D has fewer btus per gallon).

That said, you do not need a fuel additive if the fuel is fresh, good quality, water free, and correct for the temperature. You might try repeatable runs with an additive and see if it pays for itself. PowerService is good, as are several others.
