I'm coming up on the 1 year oci mark on my Taurus. The current fill is edge with Ti in 0w-20 coupled with a FU. I'm debating on changing it or not, I've had to put in 1/4qt every 2500 miles. So I'll have 1qt of make up oil at the 10K mark and I currently have 9.5K on this oci. I'm debating on running this OCI higher or changing it out now. I'd like to run it longer, however the previous OCIs were after a intake gasket change and were the flushing ocis. This is the first extended OCI. Run it longer or change it now before going further than 10K on this OCI? Oil still looks to be in good shape and when looking at other UOA, I'm confident the edge with ti will still have plenty of TBN left. I'd be changing it for monitoring the engine before going further.

I have more edge with ti, some PP 5w20, kendall synblend 5w30, Formula shell 5w30 and FU filter.

(It does not burn it just have a leaking oil pan if I put oil in over half the way the full & low mark, so I just leave it 1/4 way above the low mark. This will not damage the engine so don't freak out - it'll just prevent oil leaking out quicker and me having the smell the burning smell of it hitting the exhaust).

Volk - why not sample it and know for sure? Understandably, it will increase the cost of the OCI, but then you would know and could continue the run and find the true limit. Time should not be the deciding factor...

I would but I do not have a good way to pull a sample. If I crawl under the car I'll be changing the oil because I know how my luck goes! Lol

LOL - I feel your pain. Is it this oil (perhaps a different viscosity)? It has one of the strongest TBNs for oils there is. I would go to 12K, dump and sample so that you know for the next time.

Go to 10k miles and change it out. You will sleep better at nite and likely will not be missing too many miles on that oil. Peace of mind is worth it.

I have the gold bottle in it which is supposed to be superior to black bottle edge.

Unless it's all short trips I'd worry about it in the spring or at least wait until the first warm day of 2014. If it is all short trips, it may need changing. That quart of make up certainly gave it extended life.

Our badly short tripped KIA had the TBN on gold bottle Edge down to 1.4 after 7k, it was however still in grade shear was almost none. I think the suggestions to change at 10-12k and sample then are good ones.

Use can make quite a difference.

12 miles to work and back every day and running around for errands on the weekends. Plus some trips on the interstate.

Yes this is a vulcan engine.

Same here, 9500 miles is plenty.

Right. Synthetic is better than regular oil but is lasts only a little longer. In fact Ford probably wants synthetic and conventional oils changed at the same interval.

This specific engine is very easy on oil though. It's old school low compression, pushrod, 5 quart sump if you use the long oem length filter.

I'm telling you 15k is correct for the oil but you would need to UOA to see it. Vanilla M1 5w30 shows plenty of TBN after 10k miles. The edge is superior in respect to extended drains. I'm on mobile device now, but will sift through some UOAs another day if I get a chance for Vulcans.

For first extended OCI it should have been dumped earlier and UOA done to get rid of the guess work in performance assessment of the oil IMO.

I am glad we have here "the BITOG clairvoyants" that are able to advise you as to how to proceed in the absence of certain data.

That's the best uoa I can find on mobile device. The better ones I've come across must not have the keyword Vulcan in the subject or body. Will search more another day.

It's your money and your car but I think it's a small gamble to know it's doable and if I'm right you won't spend tons of money extending it a little here and there. Sure the safe thing is to UOA every fill and adjust based on data but if you decide to stretch it out I'm highly interested in the results of any possible uoa via pm.

D Newton, do you have any Vulcan v6 uoas from 10k+?
