Drove both the Cybertruck and the Sierra EV... There is a clear winner!

Oh no Im bummed to hear the GMC stinks!
It was my last best hope, but without any real independent videos yet I just couldnt tell.

The cybertruck is an extremely cool fun thing.

It's just not really a truck except in the loosest sense.

It's what you get when a room full of otherwise really smart guys that dont have the guts to stand up to the boss, or the guys you put in charge never used a truck.
The Sierra EV was truly my dream truck. WAS being the operative word. I’m a huge GM fan boy and I have two GM EVs but it’s so sad for 100K on a fully loaded truck rear HVAC involves the driver digging around on the infotainment, and the Cybertruck just drives so incredibly well unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. Seriously, getting back in my beloved Prologue afterward, well, it’s not beloved anymore, it’s, why do I have 2.5 years left on my darn lease :(

I drove a new Sierra EV Denali Max Range and a 2024 Cybertruck AWD with 9K miles on it back to back, and holy cow, Tesla is just miles ahead of GM when it comes to driving the vehicle and value per dollar.

The Sierra EV has a bigger battery so if you're towing, it's the one to get, but otherwise, I don't know why you would spend $20K more to buy a vehicle that drives WORSE.

Things I liked about the Sierra EV:
  • It looks BEAUTIFUL
Things I disliked about the Sierra EV;
  • Driving dynamics SUCK because it just weighs so much
  • My friend in the back seat doesn't have any way to control rear HVAC and to turn on rear HVAC takes digging through a menu on the infotainment screen. On a $100K truck!
  • Road noise was BAD.
  • The salesperson literally argued with me that it has Apple CarPlay. No, it doesn't!
Things I liked about the Cybertruck:
  • Rear HVAC screen so rear passengers can do what they want.
  • The speed-sensitive steer by wire is AMAZING. This is truly a game-changer and why this will be my next vehicle. Getting back in my Prologue and having to crank the wheel like 4 times to make a U-turn out of the dealer lot SUCKS.
  • Everything no included in the dislike section. IT DRIVES SO GOOD.
Things I disliked about the Cybertruck:
  • I'd like a shifter instead of swiping on the screen.
  • I'd like a turn signal stalk BUT I got used to the buttons by the end of the 5 minute test drive so no biggie.
  • It looks weird, but we all knew this already.

So, in short, in 2.5 years when my lease on the Prologue is up, I'm buying a Cybertruck, even though I wish it looked like a Sierra EV.
You should be able to get a GREAT deal on a Cybertruck in a couple of years as Tesla still has over 6,000 unsold ones in storage lots. The Cybertruck had 7 recalls last year alone plus one this year. Then ask yourself why Tesla isn't taking Cybertrucks in on trade? If a company doesn't want their own product back that tells me something bigger is going on.

Sure, meanwhile the GMC dealer had a lot full of $100K ICE Sierras, Sierra EVs, and Hummer EVs, and the local Chevy & Cadillac has multiple Escalade IQs sitting there. But the Equinox EV? They sell within a couple days. We love ours, it's great for the price. So don't think I have an issue with GM, I really don't.

The high end, expensive cars of all brands are NOT selling well. Tesla, GM, you name it, they have pricey stuff sitting. Tesla needs to get the price of Cybertruck down and maybe work on an SUV variant. Something like a CyberYukon (obviously not called a Yukon but you get my point). Now THAT would be PERFECT.

And while we're talking Tesla, the S and X need a refresh, BAD. Sure, the S has had updates, some fairly significant, but it still looks the same as it did 10 years ago. For a high end vehicle, that's rough. At the very least they need to bring the 48V architecture and 800V-class battery pack from Cybertruck into the S and X.

Yeah car prices are out of control. My big point is that the Cybertruck seems to have alot of quality control issues, things that an established company shouldn't have issues with. Have you priced out Cybertruck insurance costs? Not sure what your prologue runs you but I'm reading $3,800-$5,200 per year is a common quote on Cybertrucks. They more or less seem to be totalled in minor accidents due to the lack of parts.

Yeah, I think Cybertruck insurance is pretty bad. Insurance on my Prologue is already $280/mo. Not sure what we pay for insurance on the Equinox EV but I imagine it's about the same. I imagine Cybertruck will be quite a bit more. But, again, I have 2.5 years left, by then I think the Cybertruck will have its kinks sorted out and vandalism will be much less common. Hopefully that means insurance will be more affordable.

Rivian?

Very possibly, though most EVs in that price range wouldn't be far behind in depreciation.

Yeah I mean EV depreciation is a double edged sword for sure across all brands. Sucks for people that buy them new, but awesome for people that buy them used.

I had a short test drive in a cyber truck and a couple things stood out to me which seemed unacceptable.
-The wind noise was awful, maybe just a defect on this truck but certainly made for a bad first impression
-The headlights are garbage with any kind of winter weather - any kind of frozen precip creates ice dam over lights making them useless.

Interesting, I found it to be very well insulated in terms of wind noise and road noise. In fact, it was quieter than the Sierra EV which was VERY surprising. Especially because the Sierra was new and the CT was used. Bummer the headlights suck in ice, thankfully where I live it wouldn't be a problem. Good for people in other areas to be aware, though!

I drove by the Toyota dealer in a small city near me recently. They must have had 20-30 pickups on their lot. They don't usually have that many total vehicles on their lot. Even though they may be willing to deal on them, they are still too expensive.

Tundra doesn’t have good reputation, or any kind of reputation. They can’t sell them at 0.99%.

Well honestly one is a pick up truck and those that need a pick up for whatever reason (including looks) will go for the GM.
Two different vehicles, choices good. Nice review by the OP!

Two views, one traditional and the other Tesla.

Denali turned in just over 500 miles on a range test which is amazing. As the OP posts = HEAVY truck.
