I worked for one of the big 3 car companies for many years as a repairman in the chassis dept. and whenever a motor with a dent in the oil filter came down the line we were instructed to install a new filter.

I'd use it.
30 years ago I owned a Mitsubishi Mirage (Dodge Colt). On that car **I** had to dent (flatten) the back side of the can to get them to fit!!!
Never had a problem, ran that car up to 200K miles.
