Dropped An Oil Filter

If I dropped one of my Amsoil EaO filters and dented it, to be safe I would just pay and replace it...after I stopped crying.

I had a total of five filters on that shelf. The survivors were one (1) Bosch Premium, two (2) Amsoil EAO64's, and one (1) Purolator PureOne.

Why not just take it back to the store and have it exchanged? Alternatively contact the filter manufacturer and request for it to be exchanged. That's a pretty big dent, I wouldn't use this filter.

I had a few Purolators Pureones that were DOA (Dented On Arrival, but minor dents) after a close inspection. Considering that they were thin, I wouldn't use them.

Certainly don't return it to the store for credit as they will probably just put it back on the shelf.

Report back if the oil pressure pops it back out.

The only thing I'd do for safety is not run it in the dead of winter.

I'd use it if it has a spring like a WIX (like yours) but if it is a leaf spring it could be shoved sideways and have a permanently open bypass.

Save it for flushing the engine sometime if you ever do that.

On the Wix I have studied the bypass valve was visible from the outlet hole. That means it's on the inside of the dome end cap. This could be checked by visual inspection. (Yea, I know their website shows base-end bypass...) If the dome end is solid then maybe base-end, even less of an issue.

They also appear to use coil springs so a small dent would have no effect, IMO.

IIRC, most (all?) oil fiters intended for GM vehicles equiped with factory by-pass valves incorporated in the engine design do not require the oil filter manufacturers to install by-pass valves in their oil filters.

The Wix Catalog indicates that there is no "By-Pass Setting-PSI" with the 51522 filter, meaning the filter has no by-pass valve.

The by-pass valve is a non-issue with the Wix 51522/NAPA 1522 filter.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thing is though ... if the oil pressure did pop the dent back out, then the metal just got stressed a second time, which might be enough to cause it to crack/leak down the line due to the oil system pulsations constantly working on it.

what's the difference if a rock or something hits it when it's on the car and you don't see it for 3-5 months..no difference..I say it would be ok to use..

Way back when, when I was young and foolish (as opposed to now, where I'm old and foolish), I dropped my Fram filter, and put a nicely centered, much bigger dent on the end. I fired up the engine, and after about a half a minute, goosed it big time and popped the dent out. Never a had a problem. And I would never, ever do it again!
