I have a 97 Grand AM with the 2.4L DOHC engine. Today I had to replace the braket that holds part of the intake on. Got the new (used) one which ended up breaking too..... anyway I had it welded back together and re-installed everything.
On startup I was greeted with white smoke. Let it idle some to warm up and it didn't help. I did notice it was dripping water from the tailpipe, is it safe to assume this smoke was condensation and nothing else? If so, how did it get in there? It's 70F outside!
I took it for a drive through the mountains, including 4,500RPM climb in 2nd gear.
Ran fine and strong.
Got back, parked, let it idle and there was no smoke, just a strong exhaust smell.
One other thing I've noticed seperately from what I mentioned above is that if I rev the engine it reves freely and easily but the exhaust sounds like it can't keep up, almost like the engine is chugging but it isn't. Any ideas to what could cause that? I have modified the intake some, so could it be that's just a restrictive exhaust?
