Hello, I think there is no best gasket given the fact that there are differing pan materials.
Saying that, the rubber lined metal oil drain gasket is hard to beat. I forget their generic name.
My Volvo and Saab have aluminum pans and they use 18mm aluminum crush washers.
Oddly enough, the Saab uses a 14mm copper washer on its oil pan only. Kira

They are usually a soft metal either like a spark plug crush washer, or a solid soft metal aluminium
I flip and reuse the solid ones a few times,
Usually get new ones when they are the really soft spark plugs style ones

See what type of crush washer the dealer offers for your model and stick with those type.
I always used a lot of different gaskets for different applications. On the Mazdas I would use Aluminum, VW got copper, Fords generally got nylon, Hyundai Aluminum, BMW mostly got crush copper washers. This was my preference based on oil pan and plug design to minimize "mushrooming" and achieve a good seal.
The best gasket is the factory gasket and drain plug.
It's for my old truck and I don't know what it had from the factory 28 years ago
I put a new plug on and it came with this plastic one
The plug is tight but it will leave a drop or two on the ground every few days-just enough to bug me
I know it's an old truck but I don't like a leak if it can be fixed

For the old truck, I'd suggest checking with Rock Auto or even the dealer (unlikely given the age) for a suitable replacement. Some of the ones you find on the shelf at parts stores are rather junky. Another alternative would be an appropriate Fumoto, particularly if you cannot find a sensible OEM grade replacement.
Hello, The oddest thing I've seen (several times) are pale blue plastic gaskets which have been included with new, aftermarket drain plugs. They're just plain hard, brittle plastic.
I'd rather use pipe dope and string. Kira

Funny, I just purchased an oversized drain plug.
The only thing I can think of is that the drain plug I have was stripped out somewhere along the previous 200,000 miles and the gasket helps slow the drip, but never stops it.
Regardless of what type of gasket I use I always have a damp spot around the drain plug from oil.
I've been slowly fixing all of the leakey gaskets and places that I can lose oil from. This one is getting fixed with the next Oil Change.

I didn't remove the drain plug to change oil the last 10-15 years, I use Mityvac to extract the oil. When I change oil the old fashion way I bought pack of 10 aluminum gaskets for $1-2 from Ace Hardware. It worked for 2-3 OCI before it was deformed such that I had to use another.
The plastic gaskets seem loose when removed.I've been using alum or copper.whatever I can find.
My filters come with a new copper gasket but I think you could probably reuse it many times.
I gave up using gaskets. Never had any luck with crush washers or the plastic ones. I use the "form a gasket" stuff in the black tube. I put a beed around the lip of the drain bolt and install it. Never once had a drop of oil leak out. And when you remove it the old gasket peals right off.

The Dorman replacements with embedded rubber o-rings hold up the best from what I've seen.
