I HAVE 6000 MILES ON CAR AND AM NOW SWITCHING TO MOBIL 1 5w30. I WILL BE USING THE LONGER THAN STOCK MOBIL 1 OIL FILTER. I HAVE READ ON THESE SITES HOW MOBIL 1 5w30 WILL SHEAR TO A 20 WT AT ABOUT 3000 MILES. SHOULD I DRAIN AT 3000 TO PLAY IT SAFE? AM I WASTING MY MONEY AT THIS DRAIN INTERVAL. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND TO 5000 MILES BUT AM WORRIED.

In the other thread I mentioned that M1 is easily good for 5-6k or more, however I forgot to mention that I'd be a bit worried about the 5w30 going that far. With a hard driven car like yours, I usually notice the 5w30 thinning out.

I suggest going to the 10w30 and then you can safely do the longer intervals. You should definitely do oil analysis to see what works best as far as intervals go.

Bill,

People are getting all bent out of shape because the Mobil 1, 5w30 may shear marginally more than their 10w30. The bottom line is: how are the wear rates after 5000-6000 miles? You could switch back and forth between these two oils and you would not see any significant difference in wear protection. This is probably true for 95% of Mobil 1 users. I'd use whatever grade of mobil 1 you happen to find on sale.

If you lived in an extremely cold climate, you might do better with the 5w30. Likewise, in an extremely hot climate, the 10w30 might provide slightly lower wear. For most folks, it is not worth worrying about. I have been using Amsoil for 24 years (I've been a dealer since 1980) and I haven't seen any difference in wear protection with their 5w30 or 10w30 synthetics. I live in Alabama and I've primarily been running 0w30 or 5w30 synthetics in my own vehicles for the past six years.

The big difference there though is that you are not comparing two similar oils. Sure, they are both Amsoil, but the 0w30 is the series 2000 oil, which I understand is a much stronger built oil than the regular stuff. So it's not really a fair comparison.
