One of my friends that helps do the OCI's in our charity work received a 5 qt.container of Castrol Edge 0W40 oil from a parishioner in his church. He donated it to us for the OCI's we do for the less fortunate. There is an elderly man at the other complex we do oil changes at, that owns a 96 T-Bird with the 3.8 V6. He is on the list to have his oil changed this week and we were thinking about using the Castrol Edge in his engine. Opinions?

Do it don't think twice about it. Running that oil in my Jeep now and it cranks easy In cold temps and have had no issues with pressure, temps, anything. Really good oil.

Save it for an appropriate vehicle that will sooner or later need an oil change requiring such an oil. How often do you get oil in meant for Euro vehicles anyways?
BlueOvalFitter, that's a motor that says 5W30 on the filler cap and was back-spec'ed to 5W20, for what it's worth. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to run a 0W40 synthetic (free!) OCI, but that's what a BITOGer would say. I work in the automotive business, and I can't overstate how many people believe that synthetic will make an older car leak. Most people don't even understand what a multi-grade oil is. People who do halfway understand the multi-grade numbering system are gonna say "0W40? Did you say ZERO? That's like water!"

Understand the mental dilemma ... But, I suspect you need to do what you can when you can with whatever is on hand?
If he's an older guy, does that man he's out prowling around a lot, or mostly not driving to much?
The oil and motor would get along fine. The question is, do you have access to other oil that might fit the drivers life style better ...
