Local DG store had straight 30wt oil on the shelf. On the back it said "no detergent" "no additives" and "not suitable for cars made after 1930". Really?? How many cars that old are cruising around? Wonder how many people buy this stuff without reading the label. It was rated SA.

If the buyer doesn't read it, at least the label tried to give an honest warning... that's more than what usually happens.

It's not meant for cars. It's still used in pumps, gearboxes, compressors, and other applications where basic lubrication is needed, but without high temperatures or combustion gasses, detergents are not needed.

I just wish they'd label such products with ISO viscosity numbers instead, and that air compressor manuals would all call for them as well. This business about calling for a 30 grade ND motor oil, much less stocking such a thing, is a bit idiotic, given the alternatives.

DG meant it for cars. On shelf right next to transmission fluid and PYB oil. SA rating in small letters on back of bottle.

The fact that it's the cheapest oil on the shelf means a lot of DG's shoppers are grabbing it without paying attention and going out to the parking lot and dumping in the engine. Priced about the same as the PP 5w20 I picked up at O'Reily's....haha

There is a group of old model Ts running around here and some old cars in the mid/late 30's I've seen. But that's only one area. Like everyone has said, it's a great compressor oil, but autozone orange bottle 30w is like $2 and works great for an air compressor.

Its probably for a cheap car that burns oil or whatnot. Even in a normal modern day car that happens to be a quart short, I don't think it would dilute it (detergents) enough to really hurt much before the next OCI.

I use ND30 for my pressure washer pump thats about it. My dad uses 10W30HD in his Model A pickup and in a Massey Harris tractor which I do not know the year of. Old heads use a little ND30 in their gas tank for upper cylinder lube. I personally would not do that.

Worthless stuff, I don't understand why they even carry it. Everything else they have is good quality, Peak, Pennzoil and Castrol. And I think the garbage you mentioned is barely cheaper than the Peak. Just get rid of it DG.

Better than bullseye or bullet. At least the ND oil doesn't come with iron already in it. It WILL dilute the additives pretty good I would think, but better than nothing.

Did you ever get around to using the STP oil you picked up there ? just wondering if you liked it.

i see people buying it all the time here and putting in old clunkers. yes it is a junky oil, but for some people saving a couple dollars on oil is enough money for a meal, or for their kids lunch money.

times are hard for some. A lot of people bring poverty on themselves by their choices in life, but if their only means for transportation is a pontiac 6000 that leaks/burns a qt every few days then saving 2$ a qt may be worth it to them. DG oil is better than no oil!

it's easy to judge, but i try to think of the possibility that maybe they honestly don't have the extra money for a better oil. Im thankful God has blessed me with enough i haven't had to be concerned with a dollar or two difference.

Well said - Putting Royal Purple in a oil burner engine is like indexing spark plugs on a Yugo.

I know a man who still insists on ND oil in his small/mower engines - he takes good care of his stuff with routine maintenance and besides - it's his engine.

If your oil light goes on and your stuck, it is better to buy one quart to get you home than run the engine with the red oil pressure light on.
