We have a little dog about 14 lbs. He is a malteese poodle. Whenever we take him to vet or get groomed, he acts a little strangely when he first gets back home. He will not leave the den for a few days, although he has access to whole house. What is going on here

I agree. I would either do the grooming myself or take him somewhere where they will let you be present. Some groomers are rough on dogs. I would not want mine to be stressed.
Slight change of subject but taking a cat to the vet or groomers is not fun. First off, both of ours can sense in advance what is going on. Getting them into their carriers requires advance planning and cutting off any escape route. The carriers have to be in a separate room so they cannot see them or they just disappear. And once at the vet or groomers you literally have to disassemble the carrier to get them out. And once the grooming or examination at the vet is done they run back into their carriers.

I think cats understand spoken languages. They pretend they don't understand English or even basic commands but when it's in their interest, they seem to be linguistic experts.

+1 We had a rather hard-headed Airedale that was a bad mix with one groomer, we switched groomers and it was better.

You might consider a new groomer that will allow you to watch and if they are rough remove the pet and go else where. Life for them is to short to be stressed due to mistreatment. They ask so little in return for unconditional love.
Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. My dogs would gather up some of their special toys and favorite blanket when we mentioned a trip. We let them take their stuff to the motor home and put it where they wanted it. My dogs enjoyed traveling.
