I read this post in an old thread. Does Valvoline Premium Conventional have an organic friction modifier additive that is not detected in oil analysis? Is it common in most brands or is it unique?
"We see good used oil analysis performance, but the formulation typically does not contain the levels of metallic adds that we see in some of the favorites. Valvoline is rumored to be using an organic form of friction modifier, but of course this does not show up in a $25 used oil analysis.
Base oils are another issue. Valvoline is a blender, not a base oil producer, and the source of base oils more than likely will change based on the best price & long term contract.
But to answer the question, yes, Valvoline 5w30 is most likely a Grp II/II+ formulation as the GF-4 requirements almost mandate the usage of Grp II/II+.
But I would'nt be surprised if some Grp I was included in the present 10w30 formulation & others, as Valvoline has expertise with Grp I base oils due to the former Ashland & Marathon partnership in the Cattlesburg, KY Grp I lube plant."
