I'd say no, but depends on the engine. The MB seems to have either an internal (engine) ADBV, or designed to not use one at all. The filter housing is up on top, and if air can't get in, it won't leak down.

Guessing screw-on? Silicone lasts a lot longer, nitrile is a roll of the dice-cheap Mann & Hummel ones can go bad fast, better nitrile ones like Baldwin last longer. With as cheap as silicone equipped filters are (Fram PH, etc.), I don’t see a reason to use nitrile on anything other than vertical & 7500 miles or less. For example, VIOC uses Valvoline jobber filters, either Mann or Champ made, and the nitrile ADBVs are already messing up by 2000 miles on my company Transits!
It seems that the only difference between the $2.97 (10K) Super Tech oil filter and the $5.48 (20K) version is the silicone ADBV on the latter...which shouldn't really matter on my Ford's which spec. the 3614 size and are vertically mounted. I'll never even go 10K so I'm wondering if it's a waste to buy the more expensive filter?

Need to be careful with Super Tech3614 vs the MP3614. Latest posted info and a personal visual recently, shows the Super Tech3614 is still the old ecore design with nitrile "combo valve" vs MP 3614 with silicon adbv AND separate dome bypass. IMO, both those differences but especially the separate bypass make it worth the difference in price.
As an aside, just installed an MP7317 in a neighbor's 7th gen Civic.

I assume you mean vertical with the base up, but regardless, the orientation shouldn't really dictate the ADBV material. How long the OCI is more a factor as some nitrile can become stiff with extended use in hot oil. And yes, oil filters that are mounted vertical with base up still need an ADBV because it keeps all the oil in the galleries above the filter from draining back to the sump.

The anti drain back valve is to keep the oil galleries from draining back, and to keep the oil filter from emptying for a tilted or horizontal oil filter. It has been discussed at length. Oil filter orientation makes no difference. Search it on the forum. Oil enters through the outer holes, pushes the ADBV diaphragm off it’s seat, and the oil flows past the diaphragm through the media, and exits the filter through the center hole to the galleries of the engine. When the engine stops the ADBV seals against the holes and oil cannot flow back to the oil pump and sump. Good ADBV ‘s are important in all situations, vertical, and tilted, or horizontal. Silicone has been proven to be a best in most cases.
Here is the oiling system of an Chevy LS V-8. You can see how the oil goes to the top of the engine through the galleries and then down to the main bearings. The ADBV, keeps all the oil in place from the filter to the top of the engine when the engine is turned off.
In comparison to the previously mentioned ST3614, the ST6607 doesn't use a combo valve. For whatever reason, Champ Labs always used classic metal (non ecore) construction (including separate dome bypass) in the smallest applications, 4967 being the other. Now the ST6607 uses ecore center tube with metal endcaps, nitrile adbv and separate dome bypass.
You can see the Orange ADBV inside this filter. Knowing the oil flow from the pump is through the outside holes, it pushes the diaphragm off it’s seat. What screws up folks is some people might think the oil enters through the center hole which is backwards from reality. When the engine stops. The diaphragm pushes back over the holes and traps the oil inside the filter body and galleries.
There are some filters (specified for certain engines) that have an anti-siphon check valve in the center tube. Basically it's a 2nd ADBV in the center tube in addition along with the ADBV in the filter base.
