Does saving on oil even matter?

When BobistheOilGuy was running the site its primary objective was to do or for what ?

If you look back saving oil by extended OCIs in the given conditions with sustainability principles in mind was one of the key objectives of the BITOG forum.

It is sad Bob doesn't post here any more.

It all adds up, I like to save money anywhere I possibly can. So when I travel to the US, I grab Mobil 1 at Walmart. If I don't have any US trips planned, then I make sure to never pay full price up here and only buy it when it's on sale.

True, there are many other ways to save money that make the few bucks a year on oil seem insignificant, but why pay more for anything if you don't need to?

That's why we price match all of our groceries, our local store allows us to show them the competitor's sale prices that week and they'll match that price. We easily save $100 a month on groceries this way. Plus that grocery store has a loyalty program and we save about another $20-40 a month there too. So the amount I save on oil per year definitely pales in comparison, but it's still a savings!

I've gotten to the point in life when it's coming time for an oil change, I check what's on sale at AAP or AZ and if they're not competitive, I go to Wal Mart and pick up the oil there.

I rarely any longer have more oil in stock in garage than for current or one more future oil change.

There are deals all the time!

I live far enough from major retailers that I dont really get to "shop" for oils or deals.I am experimenting with different oils to see what works best in my vehicle. If there is an oil I like, I wont be swayed by a couple of dollars to purchase a different oil just because its cheaper. By the same token, if i happen to be purchasing oil and there is a great deal or clearance price on a quality oil (like Castrol synthetic for $1/qt), I will definitely stock up. It is not something I obsess about or go out of my way for.

I find it's easier to buy oil on sale if it's for a car with a 5 quart sump. Even then, the prices are too close to WM (sometimes a few $$$ more) to make it worth it. I tried buying whatever oil for moms car when filters were included, but I could get better deals at WM. With everyday low prices, making a stash isn't worth it.

The AZ Castrol GTX synblend is another story at $1 a quart. I didn't have a true need for the 10w30 but at that price, the OPE engines will love it. I bought enough 5w20 for 2 OCIs in my dad's truck plus some left over. I bought enough 5w30 for my moms car for about 5 oil changes. She sees about 25,000 a year so it'll go quickly. 5w20 is recommended for max fuel efficiency, but 5w30 can be used.

The only reason I have a small stash of Pennzoil HM was because locally my WM is going to quit stocking it. At price of $16.xx I bought what they had since my dad's old AMC 4.0 can use it too.

Between all that and my M1 TDT $1 quarts from last year, I'm pretty set. I'll just have to buy some quality dino (most likely PYB) for the oil consuming Jeep with the 3.8 to try and slow consumption.

$5 oil change (5 quarts, reusing the same oil filter for a second run because that's what Honda recommends)

$25 oil change (5qt jug from Walmart of the exact same oil)

I'll use that $20 saved and take the wife to Friday's and have dinner for two.

When's the next oil change? I'm getting hungry.

I work for money. That is I lose the time of my life and exchange it for money at [what I think is] an agreeable rate. If I could, I would work for extra time, but it's not possible.

So, I cut my losses and let the rest to chase the deals of their lifetime.

I will pay attention to offers if the delta translates in substantial time it would take me to earn the difference.

I believe the original Bob has passed on. As far as I know his widow, Helen, now runs the site.

Yes and no. Relative to the cost of owning an automobile, it is almost nothing. However, I change my own oil in part to save money. But with that said I am happy to pay ~$30 to use Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE and Motorcraft filters. Could I pay more? Of course. Could I pay less? Easily. Am I comfortable with my choice? Absolutely.

If you want to run the cheapest oil you can find I don't really mind. The same goes with the most expensive. It's a free country and it seems like a weird thing to argue about. But in general, don't you try to find the "knee of the curve?"

With that said, I could pay $12.64/qt to order my Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 off of Amazon but instead I pick it up at the local Walmart for ~5.20/qt. Paying twice as much for the same product is a pure waste of money.

Thats my point. People often spend away on vehicles, taking massive depreciation hits. Their new vehicles require comprehensive in$urance. They do not invest wisely. They pay high interest rates on their debt due to sketchy FICO scores.

They visit and lose at the casinos. They buy gas at the first station that catches their eye. They don't properly inflate their tires. They smoke and chew and drink and eat out too much. They waste tons of money daily at the Starbucks... It goes on and on and on.

My point is, like I said at the beginning, obsessing on oil prices is a futile effort. Simply buy oil at good prices opportunistically, and let it be. Focus on the other 40-50 things way more important to your wallet first!
