I noticed Royal Purple's oils do not include API SM or GF-4 designations. Does that mean they will not meet the warranty requirements of 2005 and newer vehicles that state the oils must meet these designations?

I found this response in another thread.

Tony,

The 5W20 is made using Group IV and Group I base stocks.

We are not coming out with a 5W20, 5W30 or 10W30 API SM rated oil as these
have reduced antiwear components to protect catalytic converters. The
government thinks there is a direct relationship to the amount of poisoning
of the catalyst with the amount of additives in the oil - but does not take
into account the volatility of those ad packs nor the sealing in the ring
area.

What kind of car and year do you have?
The SM only applies to some 05 and up vehicles.
RP feels so strongly about the superior antiwear of the SL that we will
offer warranty on a 2006 vehicle using the RP SL appropriate oil if the oil
is the cause of a failure and the OEM denies warranty based on using an SL
rated oil.

Happy Holidays.

David

So it looks like the auto manufacturers warranty might not pay for an oil related failure, but Royal Purple says they will. I cannot find a copy of Royal Purple's warranty nor can I find any info about them at www.bbb.org. Anybody have a warranty issue with Royal Purple?

I emailed them earlier today about API SM and GF-4 and waiting for response. I will call them tomorrow and ask for a copy of their warranty.

I also asked the Better Business Bureau for a report since one isn't available. Did the same for Matrix Lubricants. Anybody hear of them? They are pretty common in Houston.

They do have ONE API SM rated oil. Here's a list of all of their API licensed oils.

SERIOUSLY, now. Is a Stealer really able, and I mean able in scientific/legal terms, to prove the oil in the sump of a failed engine is SL or SM? If you didn't tell them it was RP, would they REALLY be able to figure it out? Would they go to the expense? I mean, it takes ages to get the scoop on the M1, would they really tie up a repair for days or weeks on a warranty claim to try to get out of the repair on that basis? Could they even get away with it? A visibly sludged engine that clearly has not had an OCI for say, 40,000 miles is an easy case. But a car maintained on RP? Who would know?

Nonetheless, and no offense to Royal Purple, but the lack of API certification just seems like a needless complication to a car under warranty when there are so many PCMOs to go to with confidence..

I would think a simple $20 oil analysis may be able to reveal that an oil does not meet API SM. API SM oils have lower amounts of antiwear metals. Plus, what if they asked you which oil you used. I don't think I'm going to chance it. It seems there are better choices for less money.

The additives that replace ZDDP are more expensive. Redline has the belief that ZDDP is still the best anti-wear additive on the market, even more so than boron. I believe it's a combination of cost and the markets they target (racing) as to why they don't go the SM route.

Buster the top is Redline 5W-20 the VOA is on the right.
The bottom is exxon 5W-20 both VOA's.

So where is the boatload of boron and other AW additives in the exxon. I see 109 for moly. 65 for boron for exxon. 617 moly and 2 for redline.

Seeing that exxon is conventional it should need more AW additives to meet GF-4 specs.

So the agrument that redline only uses ZDDP an AW additive and skip's the other more expensive ones is not accurate.

Seeing how it stacks up very well with the largest oil company in the world's 5W-20.

I'm the one who posted that RP information and they have told me twice they are not pursuing SM certification at this point because they feel it is a step backwards in technology.

As for your car warranty, it all depends on the car. My 2006 Mazda only calls for API SL or better for warranty purposes. Which, RP meets just fine.

'bout the only thing that could go wrong is you might have to replace a cat. converter in 100K miles or so, and even that is preety slim most likely. Run it with confidence IMO.

I never said RL doesn't use other high quality anti-wear additives. Don't put words in my mouth.

When Joe Gibb's, M1R, LQ, RL, RP all stop using higher levels ZDDP, I'll be more convinced it's not needed for high end racing applications. As stated a billion times, API SM is a step forward for modern engines and does take into account flat tappet engine cams.

Great oil. but,,,not worth the hasle if something did go wrong.....

My thoughts exactly....thats why I won't use redline in the car until the warranty is expired.

Who cares? Go get some Pennzoil Platinum (which is SM rated) for $2.89/qt at AAP until 1/27 in the BOGOF sale. You will get the same service out of it.

Yeah, it's not worth the trouble, but I come from a a place of tyranny: The New Car Warranty. And you can't deny the price. I just stoked the fire with QS Torque-Power syn, 2-4-1 and done. What's not to like for 7500, anyway? AA here had the Purple for 7 or 8 bucks a quart, I don't need the additives, and for that price, I'm off to Amsoil or one of the other boutiques. I still fail to see how they could make it stick in terms of denial of a claim.
