Yes, definately.

Take my Frontier transmission. With MTL-R I can use it during the (hottest) summer months but not during the winter. During the winter I have to use the specified 75W85 MTL-P.

Some Honda owners also have problems with fluids thicker than the MTL-P.

In addition, some S-10 owners have to use either SynchroGlide (equivalent to GM Synchromesh) or MTFGlide (equivalent to ATF viscosity), depending on year and age (mileage) of transmission.

And VW, Audi, and Sube MT's really need the thicker viscosity for wear reduction,

The transmission gear lube or ATF is the one area where I won't deviate from what the factory used. Get your ATF or gear lube from the dealer and be done with it. Seeing threads like this just confirms this even further.

For what reason?

I would recommend against playing chemist or tribologist with these kinds of mixing games.

There are many variables and considerations that go into the design of a lubricating fluid.

I have never mixed synthetic motor oil and ATF; however in a 91 Dodge Cummins with the AT I mixed 2 quarts of 30wt non-detergent motor oil in with the ATF. This was conventional oil and ATF and was done to increase the viscosity some. I can't say for sure, but I do think it helped in this case. No clutch dust on the pan when I dropped it and it shifted much firmer and ran a little cooler. I would not do this with any of my "modern" automatics, and have never tried this is a manual.

Over at the uofficialbmw site, Redline is very popular. D4 ATF is what most put in the manual transmissions (Getrag and ZF). MTL has been in my Getrag 5-speed for about 15,000 miles (139,000 total) with no problems. The sticker near the fill plug specifies Dexron, but the owners manual allows Dexron ATF, 20, 30 or 40 motor oil, or gear oil of an unspecified weight.

It shifts slightly better than with Mobil 1 ATF and about the same as with Valvoline Type FA. With any of them this is the smoothest-shifting manual transmissi0n I have ever had the pleasure of using. The Tremec units in Mustangs, for example, feel "clunky" by comparison.
