Does my HF 800w generator have a cat?

A 2 stroke? Really? All that oil that is in the gas would poison the cat pretty fast. If it has turned white it is probably a issue with the paint and the high temps.

Can't expect the Chinese to get everything right.

I have one also, I've run it the full 25 break in hours on a load from 300 to 700 watts.

I haven't seen any discoloration. If you cant live with the color change just hit it with some high temp spray paint.

My Solo 470 back-pack blower has a cat. It has a big "KAT" sticker on it. After it is started it purrs like a kitten. I used to work for someone who liked to use 25:1 mix. I would get tired of breathing all the smoke. I use Echo 2-cycle oil at 50:1. Burns pretty clean once my Solo warms up.

I believe it does. The EPA decal lists the emission controls on the engine and says "exhaust emission control OC". Mine, purchased in Florida is CA compliant.

I spend an hour looking for the meaning of "OC" with regard to exhaust emissions and small engines. I did not find any direct reference to "OC" on the EPA site. We, as consumers really need a "cheat sheet" or some other way to decipher those EPA small engine labels! Otherwise, they are meaningless to us.

The best I could come up with is that the "OC" probably stands for "Oxidation Catalyst", a common term in the California regulations.

Cats on small motors? I knew this day would come. I used to joke about this, and now it`s here.

It does stand for Oxidation Catalyst. And it is a holdover from automotive lingo. Back in the day we had single bed catalytic converters (HC and CO), then later three way cats came out so they had to distinguish if you had a simple oxidation catalyst or a three way catalyst (NOx, CO and HC-TWC).

The color does not bother me. Just curious.

I have nearly 200 hrs on mine with no end in sight. I run EGD oil in it.

Kudos for using EGD oil, I'm so glad there is a reliable 2-stoke oil rating instead of whatever some marketing clown feels like typing on the label!

I have a couple of 2-stroke engines with cats on them also, my cheapo Ryobi leaf blower specifically states it in the owners manual, but it's less obvious when you look at the equipment. My Jonsered 2153CWH has a green fuel cap and a bunch of warnings about not starting the world on fire from the heat.

For the discoloration, I would bet it was something in the gasoline. I have occasionally had this happen, but it seems to vary with where I bought my current tank of fuel. It didn't bother me either.

I would think it's just the premium quality Chinese paint burning off the muffler.

OTOH, some tiny 2-strokes DO have CC's now. My Husqvarna string trimmer has a catalyst muffler on it. They're not rated to last long, then it just functions as a muffler/spark arrester.

My HF 2 stroke generator fuel cap leaks like crazy. Especially when full. If there is one complaint I have, that's it. Maybe that's the Chinese version of a "generator anti corrosion program". As the fuel dries up and the oil remains to prevent rust and corrosion.

I really like that little unit, and I hope it lasts.

LOL!

My little Briggs flat-head powered Coleman Powermate 1850 vibrates so bad, panels have literally fallen right off while it was in service.

I'm surprised fuel doesn't spout right out of the fuel cap on it. It's got a huge foam breather type thing on the inside of the cap, I presume is to prevent fuel from vibrating out.

I have one, I just thought that was a really large muffler on the back of it... the fact that 2-cycle engines have Cats is news to me.

I have over 30 hours on mine right now. The break-in period is supposedly 25 hours according to the manual that comes with them.

From my experience, and that which I read online, the deal is to replace the spark plug.
Chinese spark plugs... well... are Chinese spark plugs.

I bought one a month and a half ago, had a coupon and got it for $89. So far no complaints, I did upgrade it with a NGK spark plug.
I have only ran maybe 4 hours so far. I am running a 40:1 ratio with Stihl Ultra synthetic.

There are a number of people who have run these generators to the bitter end. One guy posted a blog about it. He was able to get about 400 hours use before it died.

Mine lists 50 hours as the EPA compliance period. So, it should last at least 50 hours!

Well, I see your point. However, the cat does reduce the 2 stroke smell and that is a positive thing when you spend all day with a chainsaw and trimmer (as I do)

The argument regarding incremental improvments on cars, that were already 98% cleaner (in some aspects) than their 1960 equivalents, was that mowing the lawn emitted as much (of one particular pollutant) as driving 100 miles.

These cats help counter that argument. Am sure whatever else they'd do to a car to compensate would cause more nuisance CELs than $2 worth of cat on a piece of OPE.
