Does FP60 clean the throttle body?

My car ('01 24V Taurus with 130k on it) is in the shop right now. The service manager is attempting to 'sell' me on the benefits of his fuel-injector cleaner service, saying that my throttle body is VERY dirty.

I've used FP60 for almost two years on this car (every fillup, about once a week), and was pretty surprised to hear that. The ironic thing is that the gas mileage and performance haven't diminished any.

So, either he's lying (yes, I know a service manager that lies would be a first!) or FP60 really doesn't clean the TB. I looked on the FP60 website, and it seems to indicate it 'gently cleans the whole fuel system'.

Any ideas?
 
The throttle body is likely BEFORE the fuel injectors, thus the FP will not clean the TB. Clean it yourself with an old sock, a used tooth brush and some spray TB cleaner. If it has never been done, you'll be amazed how dirty it is!
 
When in doubt, always consider checking it yourself first by removing the accordian rubber air inlet tube and flip the throttle valve and inspect. If you see black sooty or greasy deposits then you shall consider getting a can of CRC throttle body spray and spray it off.

If it's clean and free from soot, the service manager needs to be "re-educated".

(*my take is that fuel additives does not help in keeping/maintaining deposits due to evaporation of oily deposits from PCV system or residual fuel-related deposits coming from heated motor oil. In other words: you still have to service your throttle body, MAF sensor(heating element type) on a regular basis *)

He did say it was dirty, and given the fact that it's seen 6 years and 130k worth of miles without being cleaned, I guess I'm not surprised.

I'm assuming that a dirty throttle body means poor(er) gas mileage/performance?
 
dirty throttle doesn't immediately convey to poor gas mileage, more like performance. Cleaning the throttle body gives you back that peppy acceleration sensation, whereas cleaning the IAC (idle air controller) orifice and mechanism gives you back proper/steady idle behaviour.
 
Here are my tricks to cleaning the throttle body:

-get a throttle body cleaner that can spray upside-down. This is very important for most sprays cannot do that.

-get a cleaner that is made specifically for cleaning throttle body only, and specifies that it will not dissolve/damage/corrode the coating on the throttle body(venturi section). There are some kind of PTFE or similar coating inside that is unique to most EFI cars and not in older carburettor car systems. Make absolutely sure that you get a cleaner that is sensor-safe(O2 sensor, throttle body coating, etc.)

-While I like Stooge's idea of using some old cotton sock (make sure it doesn't shed lint and it's of pure cotton variety) and an old toothbrush, I personally use heavy duty shop paper towel that doesn't shed lint.

After you have warmed up your engine, carefully undo the air duct clamp and twist it out.

Next, with a flashlight or similar light source on one hand, you twist the throttle valve using the other hand and inspect the throttle condition. Carbon buildup usually appears on the lip side of the throttle plate.

Next, you'll have to determine if there exists a big hole inside the throttle body, with your throttle plate closed. This shall, under normal circumstance, your IAC inlet portion.

Now, with the throttle plate cracked open, you lightly wet down the lip portion with cleaner and depending on the buildup, you may either wipe it down with old cotton sock or scrub it lightly with toothbrush. Make absolutely sure you do not get any lint or nylon bristles into the throttle body bore.

*note: you may have to poke your finger deep into the throttle body in order to wipe down the other inner-bottom side of the throttle plate. Make sure you do that to the best of your ability.

Make sure you wipe dry your throttle body as quickly as possible.

now, with throttle plate closed, carefully spray some cleaner into the big hole outside of the throttle plate. Usually 1 or 2 short burst should be fine. Let sit for about 20 secs before you re-assemble everything and start your engine again. Let it idle for 5 mins to clear all the cleaners before you repeat this process (of cleaning the IAC orifice/mechanism) until you are satisfied (usually, a regularly maintained throttle body, the IAC valve only needs 1 rounds of 2 short bursts and then that's it. Dirty ones or one that hasn't been serviced since day-1 may require 2~3 rounds of squirts, re-assemble-->run-->disassemble and then spray again).


Caution: Use throttle body cleaner sparingly. Do not intentionally "Wet" the entire throttle body with cleaner (as opposed to many believer's practice). Just spray enough cleaner to wet the dirty portion and then wipe it down. Better yet: try wetting the sock or towel portion and then wipe the throttle plate down if possible. This is to minimise/eliminate the possibility of solvent attacks to some rubber o-rings/seals and elastomeric materials inside many throttle body assemblies and further emission control attachments (sensors).

try to identify the big IAC hole to the best of your abilities and DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT spray or get cleaner into any other smaller holes on the throttle body, behind the throttle plate. These are mostly vacuum related devices and are driven by rubber vacuum hoses and rubber membrane and will develop holes/deterioriate if you get solvent cleaner in them.

I let my brake booster vacume line suck up 4oz of FP60 to clean out the TB. Works great and stays nice and clean.
 
Make sure to remove the MAF if it is in or near the TB. I also like to remove the IAC completely and clean it out. Just an FYI, I've cleaned my TB with CRC intake cleaner after just changing my oil and the UOA came back great, so there should be no ill-effects.

Actually, cleaning the throttle body can give you back proper/steady idle behavior. Ask anyone with a Passat. When I removed the TB from my Passat, sprayed it with TB cleaner, and rubbed it clean real good, the idle difference was night and day. Prior to cleaning, it would idle rough, surge up/down 100rpm, gasping for air, because of all the crud stuck around the edges of the butterfly valve.
 
I remove mine and do it on the bench. Spray until the fluid comes out clean. Q-tips helps as well as some synth. spray lube (eg. M-1 because it does not collect/attract dust) after the cleaner strips everything away.

But, otherwise yes...no fuel system cleaner will clean out the TB...it's air-borne contaminant related dirt.
 
I was reading on here and Terry had a post on him using FP to clean TB via brake booster line I think. Said add in XX amount and leave for 24 hours, I think. Do a search, it is out there.

The brake booster vacuum tap is downstream of the throttle body so this will not do much if anything to clean the throttle body.

May I add that a soft bristled used toothbrush is my favorite tool for cleaning the throttle body. It is at the correct angle, gives you reach to the back of the throttle plate, and does a great job. Even though it is a soft brush, don't scrub too hard though.

When cleaning the throttle body pay special attention to the hard balck carbon ring that builds up just inside the throttle plate. Use care, but you want to get rid of it.

Although it is good to spary into the IAC on many cars, some will not respond to cleaning without actually removing the IAC. Partly from how dirty it is and some by how intricate the design is. If you spray out the IAC and then have an idle inconsistancy concern, you may need to spray it much more thoroughly or remove it for cleaning.
