Does Dexron III ATF meet 2000 VW specs?

I've got a 2000 VW 1.9 TDI with the OM1 trans. It's been slipping a bit lately, and won't go into gear cold without a little rev. Planning to change the ATF & filter. 220K miles, never been changed. I have a gallon of Dexron III sitting on the bench. Will that do, or should I be buying the $25/qt VW stuff? Thanks for any advice!

Can't speak for the DexIII specifically, but Valvoline makes a multi vehicle import that is about $20-$25 a gallon.

If you are doing a cooler line flush, you could possibly use the Dex up first?

Do you have an owner's manual that you can refer to?
Is the fluid level correct?

IMO, Only if Dexron III is the required ATF by VW. Or if VWs spec(whatever VW calls it) also allows for DexIII like Nissan Matic D does.

Also, with 220K miles, you may already have other issues with the tranny and changing it out could finally finish off the tranny.

This may help:

Once you find out exactly which ATF your manual specs, have a look at this. I prefer dedicated ATF but many others recommend this.

Maxlife says it's compatible with Dexron III and II and it may work fine but it's actually similar viscosity to Dexron VI which is much thinner.

Which is still thicker than used DEXRON III.

Synthetic Dexron III compatible fluid such as Pennzoil Synthetic or Mobil 1 ATF Or Redline D4 or any number of others does not shear down. So your comment is incorrect.

Actually D4 either oxidized out of grade or shears to a 10 grade within 25K miles.

M-1 shears down to 5.3-4 CST in about the same mileage so once again you do not know what your talking about with ATF.

VW owner's manuals don't tell you much.

The ATF fluid is G 052 162 A2

Don't worry about the A2 part of the part number, it refers to container size.

Surprised the 01M transmission last that long. Many people that spent more to get the trash transmission, spent more money later to convert to the 5-speed manual. There is a silver lining though, you have the injection pump people want for making a lot more torque.

Hey, thanks everyone for the great info, especially the closeup of the MaxLife specs and the official VW fluid spec. I'm thinking of using the Dex III, and then changing it again after a few hundred miles when I'll use the MaxLife.
