I have been trying to pick through searches and threads but with all the changes in the last few years its hard to decipher who is making what brand filters. I know that its common for some makers to run multiple brands due to economy of scale but in general is there a spitball guide to who is building what these days ?
My search and google foo is weak.

Thanks
Scott

In many (most) cases, people think manufacturer 'A' makes filters for brand 'X' with no proof. Sometimes it's only because they look similar. Who's to say brand 'X' doesn't simply have a design that they provide to 'A', 'B', 'C', and so on for manufacturing ? These things are also confidential as Fram or Mobil1 or K&N would never want customers to know their filters are simply re-branded filters (in some/many cases).

We're also running into distribution issues where there are regional differences, as well as different makers for different part numbers. For someone to put an effort into such a chart, they'd just be immediately told they're wrong, so where's the fun in that?

Then someone follows the chart and buys ten year old filters from Rockauto, and wonders why there's a mismatch.

Mobil 1 says it clear as day in their warranty statement. Fram is owned by champion, Carquest premium is built by premium guard as well as microgard select and others. K&N is champion on their white “wrench off” filters, the date code is the tale tale sign.

I figured a full guide would be impractical, I was just looking for some generalizations. I spoke with a Baldwin rep some 20 plus years ago who gave me my first lesson on who makes what when he explained that as a general rule they all made filters for each other at times due to scale, Thats was enlightening.

^^^ I agree with the people who said it's a constantly moving target to keep up with oil filters ... it's a constant Whack-a-Mole scenario. Best way to keep up is to read the first page or two of the Oil Filter forum, and it will become clear what the most favored filters are at any given time. For the last 6-months or more, lot of people are in the PGI filter camp (lots of threads on those various branded filters, see post 6), me included going with Carquest Premium or MicroGard Select.

Keeping up on oil filter changes and quality issues:

Tell that to the folks who believe Mobil1 or K&N filters are the best filters on the market and are far, far superior to others and brands like Fram are garbage and you'll destroy your engine if you use 'em 😂
