My brother stopped by the other day. He said, "well you told me to replace the timing chain on my 2002 PT Cruiser when it hit 80K miles." And that they were up in Erie when it went. I asked him how many miles were on it, and he said 92K.
He went on to say that they already bought a replacement vehicle. When he tried to trade in the PT the dealer said they did not even want to look at it. One mechanic by where it broke down offered him $250 for it. He said I just put all new tires on it, can I remove the new tires? The mechanic said that is why I am offering you the $250. His regular mechanic said because he knows the history of the vehicle he will give him $300 for it.
Anyhow, the moral of the story is do the timing chain on your PT Cruiser when it hits 80K miles, even if it is a major job. It is an interference engine, and if the timing chain breaks the pistons will hit the valves and cause major damage.
