Do you sometimes randomly pick up trash?

8 years ago or so, i went to the Dollar Store and bought two of those Trash picker upper tools.
I often go in the front yard or past my property line, past the sidewalk onto the City grass area and go hunt for garbage, wrappers, cig butts etc with one of these tools and a plastic bag.
Same with the back alley behind my house, especially on or after garbage pick up day. Stuff gets flown around. Also, i live with 2 blocks of a highschool and not far from a couple of elemantary schools.
Usual lazy brats tossing their chip bags, chocolate bar wrappers, etc wherever they are out walking.
Can be a garbage can every 9 inches, they just discard wherever..
Was much more worse about 7 years ago, the neighborhood 7-11 closed down for good, suddenly became much cleaner.
The high school feild can be a pig sty. The students discard all their junk , in the fields and the surrounding residential blocks.
Funny, when i was a student in both Elem. And highschool, we students were given after school detention.
Forced to go walk the school fields and property with metal tongs and a plastic pail...Garbage picking duty! From 30 to60 minutes.
And we had to show a teacher our pail to prove we cleaned up.
I never see any students these days doing the same as we did as kids.

I don’t understand littering. If you are in a vehicle, you are going somewhere. That somewhere more than likely has a trash receptacle of some sort. Why not just dispose of the trash when you get there? How can someone be so selfish as to litter on a beautiful nature trail?
I pick up fast food bags, nip bottles, coffee and soda cups, all the time.
If I were Emperor of the world, there would be a death penalty for littering.

Ever since I can remember I have often felt the need to pick up trash others have left behind. It could be in the street near my house, in a store parking lot etc. It drives me nuts to see it. My kids used to get after me because I would and still do it.

I think the old commercial with the Indian crying affected me deeply..... 🤔

How about you?

Across the street from my neighborhood is a large city park with several muti-use fields. On the weekends there are soccer and lacrosse games, depending on the season. I walk a few miles there every morning and constantly pick up garbage as I make my laps. I’m always disgusted by the number of empty water and Gatorade bottles, empty beer cans, and fast food bags. There are garbage cans everywhere. People are just sometimes lazy and disgusting.

When I was a kid and teenager in the 60s and 70s we were concerned about the environment and took small actions to help keep trash in trash cans. We cared what our kids would inherit. The younger set today seems to think screaming about Climate Change is helping while they throw trash wherever they go. Maybe we should leave it for them to deal with when they get older.

I recently took my dog to a busy local beach park and noticed while sitting there that I didn't see hardly a speck of litter. No cigarette butts or anything. In some contexts and places around here I feel like there is less litter than when I was a kid.

When I move into a new neighbourhood I walk the streets for the first couple of weeks and pick up nails and screws. For the first couple of days I come home with a handful. After a week or so I've found them all. I consider it a public service - but good for me too.

We have a beach quite near our home. We go down there every couple of months and as I'm walking, I pick up anything that shouldn't be there naturally. Lots of foam insulation, plastic bottles, etc. I don't pick up plywood bits but maybe I should.

During my teen age years, I had a job picking up trash at a local shopping center parking lot. Try and get a teen ager to do that now! Some really gross things. I had my fill. Now, I ignore it. I will pickup debris in front of my house but that's it.

In the last five years - I have become the crying native as people have come here and brought their bad habits - I pickup what is tossed around me - and won’t walk past trash in a parking lot if I have a place to toss it …
GermX is in my pocket everyday …

Yes.
50ml plastic booze bottles and tossed vape heaters are the latest 'stars' of the gutter.

Years ago, Marlboro cigarette packs were all over the place.
In fact, back at the turn of the century, Marlboro had their "Marlboro Miles" promotion.
I picked up enough empty packs to get a large duffle bag I use to this day.

I hear ya. The cart people walk right past it when they are taking the carts inside. Blows my mind.
