Do you have an order or build sheet for any of your vehicles?

I have it somewhere, for the 2006 LS430, purchased in 2016. I emailed Lexus asking for it, as well as an owner's manual. Where those are, I don't know, they sent them via US Mail.

Watching tv or YouTubes on classic cars, put this idea of a build sheet in my mind. On the Lexus, I remember seeing something like cargo net, mats, SAT radio, as being port installed options. I saw the selling dealership was in Naples, FL. And it was for the most part straightforward and showed the list price of the vehicle (I had paid $14k and felt smug that it was $65,xxx new). It's a great car, nothing ever breaks and still driven daily. Can get 28 mpg on the highway, silly that it's rated 22.

I saw online that our Tahoe was built this past week, so I emailed the sales mgr. can you please email the order (I had seen some folks were handed it when they ordered, most no, inconsistent process). On the forum there were people saying I ordered in March should I have heard anything yet? And it was July. Many thought this entire custom order process is dealer dependent, as far as the customer being informed on what's going on. I agree. 😯

We ordered 5/31 so imho the wait is in the ballpark, not terrible. It's mind boggling what an order/build sheet looks like for an American car, down to GU5 3.23 axles. I was not aware that this vehicle had an external engine oil cooler (uncle's Suburban had it burst causing damage, it was around a '97 model).

I'm glad she emailed it, and interestingly, under the events section the inquiry was for 10, which omits the first 11 (such as order placed, preliminary status, etc.). This may have been on purpose; I think I'd come across as pretty pushy if I asked her to rerun it. I'll live the way it is.

The RPOs look something like this but it's a huge list that spans 2 pages. It never dawned on me to ask for the 2007 BMW which was ordered, but online, the color was wrong right through production, so I didn't have much faith in the process anyway. The 2011 Enclave was purchased off the lot so nothing there, nor with the 1998 Maxima, also off the lot.

One last source of puzzlement is the VIN. The last 6 is the serial number. For the most part they are all going to be identical other than a check digit.

For example, take this one: 1GNS6TRLxSRxxxxxx

I say every 2025 Tahoe should be the above, where the first x is a check digit, then the last 6 is the serial number. Ours is above 380000. Every one I see online that's on the lot or in transit, is lower. But there is one in NC on the lot, which a higher VIN than ours. How can that be, that is, if, they are assigned in sequence? If it were me, for whatever reason, higher number is better. If I were buying off the lot, I would look for a higher number and a more recent production month. I could be going about it all wrong, as I usually am. 🤣

Be curious if anyone collects order/build sheets.

edit: I suspect the TRL in the VIN indicates trim, as this website is able to decode the trim level

I have one for the F-350. Pretty cool to look at for certain. Side rant: OEM's brag about their "Starting Price" but it's often hard to find a stripped car these days.

I think that would be the exact reason to order and wait. It would seem it's possible a dealer would prefer not to, don't know what their criteria is. Meaning if they get x cars allocated in a month, are they willing to use one, on a stripped vehicle. I think probably yes, because it's considered a sold unit. But say the buyer backs out, can they sell the stripped one? We wanted to order so it's what we wanted, which is without Super Cruise and optional wheels. Even the stripped LS and LTs seem to have optional wheels in the thousands! And black out emblem packages, it's crazy...

edit p.s. $44k was a pretty penny in 2007....my 335i coupe was out the door at that, and it was not stripped, it had sport package, cold weather, and comfort access, 3 major option packages. Today $44k doesn't buy a lot!

RE the VINs you may have Tahoes made in different factories and so they get "blocks" of VINs and some factories are faster than others. There should be a character for which factory made it.

GM seems to put stuff on RPOs that are standard equipment, like what size battery, gas tank, spare tire, etc are aboard. So even a stripper work truck will have a page long build sheet. Wife had a Chevy Corsica that literally had an RPO stating it was a fleet rental special, and may have even mentioned the rental car company... I forget. They put in AC and the V6 but it was fleet white non BC/CC paint.

My wife's 2019 Prius I bought new showed port installed options like the "bumper applique" (69 dollar bumper sticker) and the way Toyota is distributed, you can't get out of that junk. It being 2019, though, I talked them down from $750 to zero, so, meh? Dealer probably hates that they can't own that profit center for themselves. My Mom's 1989 Mazda 323 had port-installed AC and it worked flawlessly. My 95 Miata has an evaporator capped off at the firewall but no other AC stuff.

I have the Fremont build sheet for our '65 442. I put it in a glass frame. Not sure where it is though...
I've owned 4 cars from Fremont, the 442 (GM), '93 Toy 4WD PU (NUMMI), 2 Tesla Model 3.

All those codes used to be on a sticker, typically in the glove box. My wife’s 2024 Yukon is about 40’ away but I’m too lazy to look right now.

I have the build sheet for the 1980 Firebird FORMULA in my signature that I bought(ordered) this car brand new.
I found it years later while doing some maintenance on the car. It was in a plastic bag tucked up inside of the fender well.
I never saw it til about 20 + years later. However, I do not have the factory window sticker(monroney sheet) for the car.
The factory sticker on the passenger side door window were very difficult to remove back in the day and got destroyed in the process.
I may be able to order a window sticker from a classic/historical company or even the manufacture(GM)...IDK!

Nope, never owned a new vehicle. Too expensive and the depreciation is crazy.
If you keep it forever then the depreciation doesn’t matter. Such as with my Corvette, I will never sell it. It actually hasn’t depreciated that much. I paid $63,000 for it in December 2017 and I could easily sell it for $55,000 right now.

With some cars it makes sense to buy used but for others that hold their value very well it doesn’t make sense to do that. I remember when I bought a 2000 Civic brand new and at that time I was seeing 1998 Civics that were only $2000 less than the new ones. That was an easy decision to buy new. With my current Civic things were different. I paid $11,400 for it in 2021, it was 5 years old at the time and new ones were double that price. Easy decision there.
