Oil poured into the top of the engine goes straight down the drain holes to the oil pan. Oil poured into the center of the filter is pumped to the bearings before ever passing through the filter. I have prefilled for years, but I am beginning to wonder if it is one more way of going out of your way to do more harm than good.

If you are really worried about it, shove a condom in the hole, pour your oil through it, and be done with it. Don't know if that will work, and don't know what your wife would think if you were buying condoms for "oil changes". The way i see it, let the container sit for a day, let everything settle, and most of the bad stuff will be at the bottom.
Pour it through part of your t-shirt as a screen before it goes into the filter.

I do it too. Even on the 540i which has a large cannister style filter setup (not a spin on).

I'll add one more thing. My 1.6l VW Diesel has a really big filter with the mounting area facing up. Despite the size of the filter and mounting position it is always half empty when I remove it. As a result VW Diesels are noted for their low oil pressure light being on several seconds after start-up. These engines last longer than most gas engines and the missing oil in the filter is more than two Toyota filters would hold. Held side by side the VW filter is the same size as a PH8.

No - Honda engine has a horizontally mounted filter, so oil falls out as the filter gets spun on. I figure the quart of oil left in the engine doesn't move until the system gets pressurized, so less is left unlubricated than a normal startup after sitting overnight with most of the oil drained into the oil pan. The low oil pressure light doesn't seem to stay on any longer than usual after a change, anyway.
To be on the safe side, pre-fill or not to pre-fill, I do every other time, once yes, another time no.
Some car manufacturers state change the filter at every other oil change, so I guess the alternating method is a good way to go.
we have "OCI" for oil changes... now... do we already have? or Should we have "FCI"?
