I have an off-road rig (96 cherokee, 4.0) I run Rotella 15w40 in it. I was changing the oil and filter every 6 months but I realized I am maybe putting 500 miles on my rig a year. So I decided to just drain a quart of oil out and replace with MMO to help with cold starts in the winter and I will change the oil every year. My question is will the filter (FL-1A) still function properly if I leave it on for a year?

You may be able to use the oil and filter for 2 years if the yearly mileage is only 500 miles, if most trips were more than 10 miles.

Yeah when I built my rig I specifically chose the Cherokee due to the 4.0, AW4 and the longer wheel base as a starting point. The 4.0 and the AW4 are awesome. Here it is in its current form http://i838.photobucket.com/albums/zz303/Ericday/DDay Oct 2010/29298696.jpg

That's kind of a broad statement. What if someone does 15K or 20K a year? There has to be a time & mileage "not to exceed".

I was going based on the mileage that the OP had already given us.
