Why is that? I got them to install but will not work.

There is nothing to clean, no malware, no viruses, etc. in Linux-based operating systems. You are safe, secure and private and your burden in terms of policing and upkeep is near zero.

In addition to what was said just above this post, CCleaner, for instance, looks for things that simply don't exist in Linux and definitely not in the same places. The trash is a different folder, temporary files aren't the same, there isn't a bunch of garbage left behind from package installs, and there's no registry to fix, not to mention that there's no Windows Index bloating itself.

Somewhat related question, but what does one need to do to make Ubuntu 14 fully functional on a USB Flash Drive?

I use Universal USB Installer to build a live USB Flash Drive and I can boot from it fine, but when I try to perform updates, I run into issues and am no longer able to boot from it afterwards. Part of the USB drive is designated as a Persistance File so Linux should be free to use this space to save/modify files as needed.

Is there another/better way to have Ubuntu permanently installed on a USB drive and have it function as OS drive?

You would have to install it to the USB like it's a HDD, not just to make a live USB. You would first need a big enough USB, I would say at least 10GB would be good, and then you would have to install it to the USB with the something else option during install. (you would either need a different USB for booting the live session or boot from a DVD)

No direct experience here; as I only carry a Live USB stick for demonstrating or installing. I was under the impression, though, that you need to boot from your USB stick, choose "Try Ubuntu" and then create a user account. I think then that account will be stored on the "persistent partition". After that, things may work more smoothly.

Yup. That's what I ended up doing. Thanks.

It ended up being somewhat of a PITA initially, because the live USB was unable to format my other USB with ext4 file system - it kept getting stuck during format. I had to install gparted and format/partition that destination stick there first. After that, it worked fine.
