Remove the DVD disc from the drive, then reboot the machine. Will it allow you to boot into Ubuntu? If not, then you do not have Ubuntu installed on your HDD.

If Ubuntu is locking up on live CD, then it will also lock up when installed on HDD. Looks like you may have some hardware compatibility issues that need to be resolved first. That's why Ubuntu provides live "preview" feature of their software.
Get Ubuntu to run well on the CD preview mode and it will run well when installed.

Based on his earlier comment, it was locking up because he was removing the DVD from the drive while working with the system.

Well today it finally asked me if I wanted to install it on my computer...so I did. So far so good.

Free at last !! Free at last !!

Ha Ha...Well it locked up again here on Bitog. Couldn't do anything. Had to turn it off. What can I do if it locks up again?

What are your system specs? Like CPU, RAM..?? Ubuntu might be to much for your system. You might be better of trying something like Linux Mint (Mate) if the computer is older. Is windows still on the computer as well as Ubuntu?

Yep, that's certainly a possibility. I've had better luck with the open source drivers than the proprietary ones. Of course, if the open source drivers are crashing, then the proprietary drivers might be in order.

It has the Intel® Xeon(R) CPU X5550 @ 2.67GHz × 4

Graphics Gallium 0.4 on NVA0

3.9 GiB Memory

What proprietary drivers do I need?

Yea, you can run Ubuntu fine with those specs! Try looking in the driver manager for any proprietary drivers.

It has a Nvidia GT 200GL
But it says it is using an alternative driver. And offers a few of the Nvidia drivers

One of those will have the word "tested" and/ or "recommended" in parentheses. Use that one. (You'll have to reboot after it's done installing).

I installed the Nvidia driver and it crashed again. I had sound until I downloaded Wine. I installed Wine so I could open some exe files from ccleaner and malwarebytes. Now I'm still unable to open thses files and arent sure if I have Wine.

Hmm. Something possibly messed with the Alsa mixer stuff. I haven't played with Wine ever. Why did you wish to open CCleaner and Malwarebytes from within Linux? Would a dual boot system be more appropriate for what you're trying to accomplish?

Why is that? I got them to install but will not work.
