DIY Fused Jumper?

Have any of you guys made a fused jumper? My A/C is out, and I think it's the compressor. Before I do any other troubleshooting, I want to give the compressor a check. I want to see if I can get the clutch engaged by hard wiring it to the battery using a fused jumper.

I've scoured the internet for DIY Fused Jumper, and there isn't a lot out there.

Check the pressure first, if its really low it might not cycle until you get some refrigerant in it.

You can get an inline fuse holder for a couple bucks at the parts store that will take an ATC fuse. Splice that into a longer wire and you're good.

^^^ what he said. or just buy the fuse, and crimp to spade lugs on to some wire that fits the fuses. 3 amps is what I'd expect to see... 5-7.5 amp fuse = good.

or put a test light on the wire and see if the comp is seeing power.

Why bother? Just jump it with normal wires to see if it clicks and the magnetic clutch engages.

If you are low on refrigerant, it won't engage by normal means. And if the compressor is puked, it will lock up and not turn .

That's what I ended up doing. I jumpered the relay with a paper clip. Just like I thought - no go - and it was definitely getting power

Be careful when using regular jumper wires to test ignition components! My coworker had an ignition solenoid problem and replaced some wires with regular wire, not knowing that the bad wires were fusible link wire. He nearly started his truck on fire!

Most of the auto stores have fusible link wire in various ratings:

If you know what you are doing, regular wires are great for testing.
