I have a 10-year old Gateway PC that I am ready to dispose of. I have removed the HDD, which is the only thing in the computer that I wanted to keep. What is the (environmentally) proper way to get rid of the case, and the PC's guts?

I took 4 old PC's to the land fill which has a special area that recycles appliances, Tv's computers etc. There were literally thousands piled high.

A local computer shop here offers free recycling of most components. CRT monitors do have a $10 recycling fee. I took in a bunch of old parts that I no longer needed or wanted. It made the wife much happier.

The Best Buy near me charges a $10 recycling fee if you drop off computers, but they give you a $10 Best Buy gift card, so it ends up being free...assuming you'd be going to Best Buy anyway.

My employer has the custodial work done by a company that employ the mentally handicapped. They take monitors and circuit boards and recycle them free of charge and the money they make helps pay for their living expenses. After watching a 60 Minutes program on the subject a few months ago, I hope they do a little better job.

The local dump should have the facilities to recycle just about anything. The odd time I can be pressured into getting rid of something (I'm a pack rat of the highest degree) that's where it goes, and of course soon after I'll find a use for the part I got rid of.

All my used oil/ other auto fluids goes there as well.

Out of curiosity, I asked my company's senior network engineer what the company policy is regarding disposal of junk PCs. Her response was "Find a dumpster".

I was thinking of that...I have 4 old Dell win95 systems that all work and have office on them. I thought maybe goodwill could sell them cheap to someone who can't afford a computer.

I'm keeping the hard drive, so the system is practically useless.

Nashville has a local recycling program, but they take a computer system once a month, you have to show your a resident. Huntsville doesn't have something similar?

I would make my wife happier if I got rid of some old computer equipment...mainly a couple of CRT monitors. But I'm sure she wouldn't like it if it cost me 20 bucks to get rid of them.

For now, they are taking up space she thinks she needs.

Ebay is a place to turn over computer parts. Surprisingly, some people are still looking for OEM motherboards from Gateway/Dell/Compaq/HP to restore some old system. I got rid of an old HP P4/DDR motherboard last month for $20+shipping. Some owners will spend to keep an old system running.

CRTs are the big disposal problem. Hard to even give them away sometimes.
