Cascade Pure Rinse Formula (powder) was great too, not sure if it was better. But it was more expensive.

To much soap will also cause a build up inside the dishwasher.
Run a cycle empty with a jar of coffee mate dumped in, cleans it up really nice.

Helen's mention of vinegar is an excellent suggestion. In an empty dishwasher, start,then when actual wash cycle starts open door and add approx 1/2 gallon vinegar and let machine go through rest of cycle.

I've used Cascade Complete in the past with excellent results as well. I now use the Costco stuff 'cause it is a lot cheaper and works virtually as well for me. Pretty hard to beat the price- $8.59 +/- for 20 lbs. which will do more than a dish or two. But as I said the Cascade Complete did very well.
Have always used the unscented stuff. Hard to find. A name brand had it and discontinued it several years ago (happens to a lot of products my wife and I like), but I found Kroger (grocery store) brand had an unscented version, so that's what I use.
As for cleaning the dishwasher, we dump a container ot Tang in it every spring and fall. This is according to The Appliance Doctor, who had an appliance store in the Detroit area for many years.

Tang contains a lot of citric acid. Hence the scale-removing cleaning action.

No doubt....notice Pablo's post about 12th (or 13th) ordinally speaking.....does Pablo mention citric acid? Save the Tang and the coffee creamer(?) for the kids. Vinegar (acetic acid) smells all nasty and everything, but doesn't have near the chelating effect or crust dissolving power dry citric acid does. Trust me on this, I got the tip from the REAL inventor of WD-40 (no [censored]).

The coffee machine cleaner that I know from over ten years ago consists of citric acid (50%). It's an old hat.
