Direct Injection issues still a problem?

I tried doing a search but nothing really answered my questions.

My wife is on the new car kick agian, which seems too happen every 6 months or so. She seems to be stuck on the new Buick Verano. I'm not sure if i'll agree to get her a new one yet, but I told her I would atleast look into it, lol.

The one major concern I have about it has the 2.4L Direct Injection engine in the car. I know that you shouldn't do extended OCI's on them. But, what about the carbon issue? Is it still a problem? Is there a service that can be done every so often to clean it out, if so whats the cost?

I test drove a couple of Hybrids, the Ford product and the Toyota both using DI gas engines and in both cases the service department says not a problem we just do an injector cleaning every 15,000-20,000 miles. So they have not really solved the issue it seems and they consider the cost of a cleaning $150 or so every 15,000 miles as normal operating expense for the customer
 
My ecoboost has been trouble free. I'm at 5k oci due to fuel dilution. Ford and gm supposedly have their little secrets that they used to minimize valve deposits.

What?

It's not the injectors that need cleaning. It's the intake valves.
 
I'm already seeing DI injectors come in with heavy deposits on the spray nozzles.
Its good for me for sure but i wouldn't want to own one just yet.
 
There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago. According to a BITOG member who works at GM they are unaware of any DI carbon buildup issues now or ever.
 
Well that is not good news. I really dont wanna buy a new car as it is, even more so one that I have no way of fixing. It's nice to be able to run a cleaner through the tank once a year or so, lol
 
Doesn't Toyota and Lexus have both a direct injection and part time fuel injection system to help reduce deposits on the intake valves.

Has Honda started using direct injection engines yet?

Your comments IMO have meaning, since you also have first hand experience with servicing them. Funny I took a pounding for my views on DI a while back, and yet people here are echoing me. I'd pass I think the technology has a way to go. Fuel dilution and valve deposits are a problem.
 
I agree with GMBoy, I haven't heard of any real issues with GMs DI system, other than some fuel dilution which is a relatively minor problem compared to the intake valve deposit problems that plagued VWAG vehicles. Same goes for Hyundai and Ford. Looking at the PCV valve area on our DI Equinox, it looks very complicated, I'm guessing there is some sort of mechanism to cut down on the "stuff" from the PCV valve and these engines also lack EGR (VVT makes up for it).

Problem is DI is here and it isn't going anywhere. Maybe the technology will improve with time, but soon nearly every car will have it.

Nope, Yup, Nope..
 
GM seems to have no probs. I'll let the Ford guys speak for themselves.

BMW and Mini are two that I know are having fits.

IIRC Honda is about to jump on the bandwagon with their new "Earth Dreams" engine line. I'm in the "too scared for now" group, and lucky enough when I was shopping that my two front runner car choices still had port injection. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable w/ a DI system right now unless it were one of the few that has both types of injectors, and even that's extra complication.
 
Verano is a very nice car. I wouldn't worry about DI issues, i'd worry more about keeping the ol' lady happy.
