I have read many posts on the board and have come to the realization that Conventional oils are regarded to be a lot better now and should not create excessive sludge compared to Synthetics.

However, are synthetic s easier on seals? Is a engine that has seen only Sythetics less likely to leak than a conventional fed engine? I am talking about later down the road like in the 80k-130k mile range.

Also, would an engine that has only seen syn oil consume less than a car that has been filled with a quality Dino? This once again is not meant when the car is still new but down the road 80k-130k?

I know that there are lots of factors but lets pretend that both the syn and dino my questions were changed regularly in my questions. 5-7k for syn and 3-4k for the dino.

I think we also need to include, does an engine running on dino ver syn over 100k have more, less, or equal wear between the two?

I use both synthetics and dino where berfore I just used synthetics.Seems like dino has come a long way and can keep a well maintained engine clean.

The more they change , the more I like

I have not seen a sludged motor in a long while now " baring some dirty Castrol GTX engines " and some people I know don't really think about oil changes . Lifetime Service Fill thinking going on there

Good move or not , anticipating price increases I picked up some of the SL, group II , 5w30 Trop Artic over the weekend . 96 cents a quart .

I don't think the future holds for lower cost oils decreasing in price

I just picked up a case of GTX 5w30 SM/GF-4 at Pep Boys for only $1.39 per quart, sale price. If you look around, and check Sunday ads in the paper, you can find good oil for cheap!

Curiously, LubeReport reported this morning that in some cases Group II base oils are now priced less than Group I base oils! Price manipulation or economies of scale as hyrdrotreated oils gain further market share with the advent of the SM/GF-4 motor oils? Whatever's involved, it should be fun to watch as it plays out in the coming months. Meanwhile, enjoy the cutthroat pricing while it lasts! (Independant lube manufacturers are already crying foul and asking the FTC and the Justice Department to step in...)

Well, I didn't really get an answer to anything? Will Using Syn oil decrease wear, decrease consumption, and decrease the chance of seal leaks in the long run over a good dino?

Perhaps not. But it does decrease the time I spend under my car changing oil. And with a family and other things going on, that's becoming important to me.

wn1998, Not sure this will be of much help but here goes. I was just looking at my Bosses 88 Ford Thunderbird tonite. It has a 5.0L V-8 al he has run in the car for 130000 miles and 16 years is Valvoline 10w-40. It does'nt leak a drop of oil. I know because I have parked right next to him on a concrete parking lot for the last 8 years. I have a 96 GMC with the 4.3L v-6 it has 105000 miles and does'nt leak a drop of oil using Mobil 1 10w30 it's whole life. I just bought a new 2004 F150 and after all the good used oil analysis on this board I will be running regular Pennzoil 5w-20 and changing oil between 3000-4000 miles. Moral of the story, they all work good if regaular maint is performed. You decide what works best for you and stick with it. Good Luck....

Based on your questions, no, maybe, and no.

Synthetics obviously beat dino's in the extended drain category. And in some cases, the oil consumed between drains may be less with syn's than with dino due to the higher volatility index of synthetic oils.

Excellent used oil analysis for both syn & conventional oils indicate similar wear performance for both.

Many factors can contribute to seal leaks. I haven't run across an info that indicates synthetics are better than dino's for seals.

Especially with the upcoming GF-4 conventional oils, I'm becoming more & more a dino fan as the cold crank & volatility numbers just keep getting better.

93 silverado 4.3 177k miles no engine work: 3000 oci 1st 100k miles 5w30 castrol dino, 1 qt. dura lube at 50k miles no difference in running, 4000 mile oci after 100k miles, from 100k -120k miles castrol 5w30 blend no difference in running, constant 17mpg whole life, next 40k miles gtx 10w-40, last 10k miles 1qt. consumption in 4000 mile oci, now running castrol rx 15w40 with much reduced consumption, but oil pressure may too high

95 yukon 5.7 144k miles no engine work: same oil history except has consumed 1 qt.oil every 2500 miles since new, last 2 oil changes castrol rx15w-40, much less oil consumption,

Thanks to this site I have learned about these diesel oils. They seem to work very well in these high milage trucks. Where can I find a site specific to these motors and my new Silverado 5.3. Thanks djr
