I got a 98 dodge ram 5.2liter (318ci).I was going to run synthetic oil in it but after listening to some of yalls advice, I have decided against it(the truck will only get 5k-7k miles a year put on it) I currently am running Havoline conventional oil in it but was wondering if Havoline is any good? Is there a better conventional oil I should run instead?

Maybe I should have ask what conventional oil is best? or what oils are good

From noob to noob, there is no "best" oil. just like there is no best viscosity. Maybe one viscosity will be better than another based on climate and manufacturer specs.

I spend some time here and notice some oils are better suited to some climates and engines, but the only way to analyze so minutely is knowing and understanding UOA.

Let's say oil A burns more than oil B. Is oil comsumption an indication of what's going on inside the engine? Maybe burning some is good for the combustion chamber or maybe it leads to carbon build-up.

As for Havoline, I plan to use it's 10w30 oil for most of the season, then go to Castrol 20w50 in the summertime.

I think Castrol is BP and Havoline is Texaco.

In the name brand Dino's really if you like a particular oil due to bottle design, color of bottle, they sponsor a favorite drive, always used them what ever the reason you are going to do just fine.

Relax and find something better to worry about like whether or not you need to do an ARX cleaning or what not.

I have not run the new Havoline but the old stuff ran fantastically in my car and the UOA to prove it.

Havoline is owned by Chevron.

If someone pointed a gun to my head and made me pick one dino, I would pick Pennzoil conventional.
