Yes they use a remote, it should come with a remote, and you can also use just about any universal remote you just have to program it with the code for the converter box which should be in the instructions for the remote.

so the remote's instructions will say how to program the remote for that particular box?

I cannot believe how much these boxes still cost for the simple task they do.

Yes the universal remote should have instructions on how to program the it, along with a list of a bunch of codes for different devices. Some universal remotes it can program itself by scanning the device, or you can program it with specific codes from the list in the instructions.

I assume you are talking Video and not audio. Are you talking the OTA or Cable? I have a couple boxes and remotes as im sure 1/2 of the population in the USA also have covered with dust in the closet - if you mean OTA for digital tv conversion quadrature detectors.

I have three Zenith DTT901 Digital TV Converter Boxes "deployed" in my house. (It's been a very good box and I'd recommend it if you can find one.) In two instances I'm using the remote that came with the unit. It handles a) control of the box, b) turning the TV on/off, and c) controlling the volume via the box instead TV. (I would prefer for the volume to be controlled by the TV, but it works fine as long as you "fix" the volume on the TV itself at the right point.)

With the third TV, I'm using an old Sony RM-VL600 universal remote since I have the TV, converter box, VCR, and DVD player all part of that setup. The RM-VL600 is a learning remote and I "taught" the buttons for use with the converter box. The remote itself did not have a code enabling it to be used with the converter box and neither did either of the other two "regular" universal remotes I had laying around. But all of these remotes were purchased before the converter boxes came out, so a new universal remote you purchase today may have that support. But "out of box" support will be something to look for.

I have a nice Panasonic analog TV which provides a very good (for the type) picture and a box for over the air TV. I have a box for it which will turn the TV on and off and run the audio gain up and down by controlling the box audio output. Works fine. But, I would have to say that given the price of flat screens today, unless you get the box for free it's hardly worth it as opposed to a new set. The Zenith box (the guy who started Zenith had one of the original US ham radio callsigns "Z9" which became the company name) is a good one. By and large, the coverage area on digital UHF is not as good as the old "low band" 2-13 channels. The picture is great, when you can see it. The digital system does eliminate the ghosting which plagued analog TV.

Yes, for OTA

I might be able to point you toward a remote that will work with it.
I have a magnavox

You turn the TV on/off with it's remote, and it n only control the volume.
The other remote turns the converter on, and changes channels [but no volume].

Is it a TB100MW9 or TB110MW9?

If so, I think an RCA RCRP05B remote will work, using code 1563. Look on eBay for one of them, or at your local Best Buy ($18). That model number is important. Do not let a salesman push you into another remote.
