Thanks sprintman! That is a good site.

OK after going back and forth between Nikon and Canon.....suddenly we are settling on:

OLYMPUS C740 UZ

10X optical zoom, macro, etc. Locally for $199!!

Any landmines with this one?

Something I forgot to mention on the D-395 is that it has relativly slow cycle time between pictures. It takes a picture pretty much instantly when you click the shutter, but takes a few seconds before it's ready for the next. That would be something to check on in another low priced Olypus. Durability of a10x optical zoom in an ionexpensve camers would be concern too. Read the reviews carefully.

I just bought the Nikon Coolpix 4600 for $199. It really does great in low light conditions. It has some limited level of manual focus. From what I've heard, stay with a 4 meg pix camera or greater or your print size will suffer. It's a real zoo out there for these digital camers. Realizing that these lower cost jobs are just for learning the digital side. I expect to upgrade when I finally figure out how they work and what I can really do with them.

xs - the reviews say it actually is pretty durable, but looks a bit cheezy. As for cycle time - yes this is a concern.

The $199 is recent and with a $100 rebate. This camera has been around for a few years. This is the time that I told my wife to wait for....the prices are really dropping now.

$400 now gets you a 7.2 megapixel camera (overkill!!)

It sounds good in the reviews and user comments. One drawback is that it looks like the front of the camera doesn't have sliding cover like a lot of Olympus cameras. The sliding cover makes them pretty much pocket safe without a case. My wifes low end Olympus gets used more than my high end Panasonic 12X optical stabilized zoom for just that reason. That may not matter to you, depends on how convenient you want it to be to carry.

One of the great things about our Fuji is that it takes AA batteries, it's great for vacations because every store has them and rechargables are much cheaper then battery packs.

Are AA batts convenient ? Yes. Readily available ? Absolutely. Cheaper in the long run than rechargeables ? Definitely not.

he IS talking about **rechargeable** AA NiMH. Those that take AA will usually take either akaline or rechargeable NiMH which IS a great feature.

Thats one of the reasons I bought the one I did (Sony P51). It is nice to have a readily available back-up battery when the rechargeable run out and you can't recharge them.

Exactly. I bought a four pack of rechargable AAs for $12 that's cheaper then any battery pack, and if I need a backup regular AAs will work.

OK we bought the Olympus C-740. Seems like a lot of camera for $199. 10X optical zoom. 3.2 megapixel is OK enough for us. Not the smallest camera, but fine for us.

Wife has her sweaty palms on it now....I can't seem to touch it.
