Differential fluid change interval?

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with the Dana 30 front axle and Dana 35 rear axle. Both are open differentials. This Jeep rarely sees off road use, and is used only for short trips. My commute is 7 miles one way. I also rarely do any towing with this jeep. I run conventional 75w90 in the front and conventional 85w140 in the rear axle. I also add a bit of Lubri Moly MoS2 additive to each axle.

What would be a good fluid change interval given the above info?

Look in the owners manual. Usually somewhere between 50-100,000 miles is when they call for a fluid change. Some vehicle manufacturers call for ridiculously short change intervals. My truck calls for a fluid change every 15,000 miles. After 15,000 miles it looks the same as the day it went in which means I wasted my money especially when you use an expensive group IV synthetic oil.

okay. Unfortunately I bought my Jeep used and it never came with the owners manual. I do have a Factory Service manual in the mail though.

Because the front does not see much use (load wise), you may actually want to change that one out more often! The front diff IME gets nasty whitish condensation inside. The rear regularly heats up so is less of an issue, and it seems that this lube can last a long time.

I would get a really good gear oil like amsoil or redline and run it 75-100k. Just be sure to run it in 4wd once a month to keep the front lubed.

I believe the front diff is spec'd for 75w-140 regardless of useage. The rear can take conventional, but is spec'd for 75w140 if towing. I run 75w140 in both even though I don't tow.

Autozone has Valvoline 75w140 for $12.99, a great compromise between price and quality IMO. I'm a maintenence nut, 30k is all I can stand for a diff.

sever interval B is 15K believe it or not.

I use Amsoil sever gear in mine. changed it back in 02 at 5K with 75w-90 series 2000 and again at 50K with 75W-140 with the severe gear.

Gear oil is cheap, use the best.

First change is important, because it has all the metal from break-in in it. After that, unless it is abused, it should be able to go quite awhile if synthetic is used.

That looks really good, how long was it in there for? You might have just convinced me to use Redline.

It been in their for 3 month, no noise really smooth. I plan to leave in for 50-100k miles ( that will take me for ever to get their ) I did some reading on couple jeep forum and most peoples say they try other and seem not happy with it, some say need add little bottle of mopar additive to other brand oil, and only redline is the only oil that perfect out the bottle without need add anything. I trust redline from race abuse high horse power, high torque, and few friend serious heavy towing, well it good enough for my jeep
