Differential Applications that do not require LS Additive - should the additive be avoided?

Let's say you're working on a differential that does not require a limited-slip (LS) additive.

Many over-the-counter differential fluids already contain some quantity of LS additive.

Is it beneficial to seek a fluid that does not contain the LS additive?
 
The Motorcraft diff fluids in 80w90, 75w85, and 75w140 do not have additive in them. The Torsen diffs and e-locker diffs say to not have an additive in them.
These bits of information are very interesting -- curious if they're still applicable:

Generally, synthetic lubricants have lower friction properties than conventional, non-synthetic oils do. Synthetic lube may still be preferable if the duty is severe or high temperatures are a concern. Synthetics typically offer superior performance in those areas due to a more durable molecular structure. The overall friction properties of the lubricant are also influenced by additives and modifiers blended in. Clutch type differentials typically need these modifiers. They help to even out the transition from static to dynamic coefficients of friction between the clutch plates. This, in turn, smooths out their operation and reduces chatter. However, it also means that they may slightly lower the overall differential locking performance as well.

Lubricants sold as “limited slip oils” have these additives premixed in. Be aware of this when making a selection. For OEM applications, the validation testing that I referred to above includes extensive vehicle handling and chassis dynamic tests. Consequently, the OEM oil (and differential performance) is matched to the intended handling behavior for that car. So, where does that leave us? Quite simply, here: use a good quality product, one that meets the needs of your ring & pinion gearing. Beyond that, think about what your specific needs are and choose accordingly.

One factor is the type of differential. Some have clutches, others (like Torsen) do not.

No. it won't make a difference.

I have used Mobil 1 75/90LS in circle track rear ends and in Saginaw transmissions. What can the LS additive harm in the trans? Never have noticed any abnormal wear.
 
Have also run ATF in Saginaws and T10s with absoulutly no noticable problems. Always in 4th though straight thru.ATF is compatible with clutch materials by design but never noticed any bad effects on sycros.
 
I was read the riot act by a well-respected (by others) but no longer active member here years ago when I participated in a thread about this very question and was told how foolish I was for using a gear oil that had LS additive already in it into a standard differential. I told him good luck in finding one that does not.... around here at least, its not easy to do anymore. Other than oxidation rates being higher, I couldnt get him to say what kind of problems exactly one could expect by using an LS-ready lube in a regular, non LS differential. Its been about a decade and several hundred thousand miles spread over multiple vehicles and I havent lost a differential yet.
 
FWIW I have a 2012 GM truck with the Eaton Govlock rear differential and I noticed regular NAPA brand 80W-90 looks better when I drain it than the synthetic 75W-90. It's just my anecdotal evidence but I originally bought conventional fluid after my second drain and fill (25,000 miles) because it was cheaper. It appears to actually work better at least in my case.
 
Had GM LT’s for many years - just used Delvac 1 - not known for LSA …
Now with two 4WD Tahoe’s - still use this gear oil - but the newer requires LSA - used 3 small bottles of AC Delco - started with two - but figure 8 tests led to the 3rd (tiny) bottle of LSA…
 
Majority of the applications does not have LSD, yet people still use it without a problem.
 
I think most people think of LS additives as throwing sand into the diff. Like sand used on a rail line. Its not. In fact its an additive that makes the clutches slip more smoothly during dynamic friction vs static. So LS additives will not wear gears or bearings any more than straight gear lube. Or so I understand.

I wonder how LS additives would handle wet clutches such as in an auto transmission (where it doesn't belong) or a power shift shuttle transmission like a tractor, also where it doesn't belong? Probably would kill them quickly.

The GL-4 and GL-5 issue of yellow metal reactivity is another matter entirely.

This was effectively my understanding from my "Master Installer" training through Yukon.
 
It can reduce the locking effect of a Torsen/helical diff, which broadly speaking don't have LS required or suggested by the companies that make them. Despite that, some OEM's spec LS oils on factory-equipped Torsen vehicles for the sake of NVH.
