I have notice that if you were to go buy the manufacturers motor oil, the different small gas manufacturers have different API rated oils. Briggs & Stratton oil are API SJ, something with Kohler. Kawasaki is API SL. Honda is of the latest, API SN. Why do you think that is?

Some manufactures use what ever is less expensive and still meets their needs. OPE engines are not rocket science material. B&S recommends oil rated from SF and higher for conventional oils. For synthetic oils they ask for SJ or higher.

Is there that much of a difference between the different engine design that lubrication wise would be different. If not, we could learn off of the those manufacturers who recognize the latest benefits of oil for what they are. For instance, Honda seems to recognize that 10w30 is more stout than other manufacturers. They don't worry about increased oil consumption like others do. And then there oil meets the latest API rating. Likewise, Briggs and Stratton, so far, are the only ones who recognize the real benefits of synthetic oil and the use of them.
