Diff Service Questions, 09' Ranger 7.5"

I've been putting this off for a while now, and I'm going to do the job soon.

1. Axle code is "87" which is 4.10, 7.5", non-limited slip. It calls for 80w90, I plan on using 75w90 Schaeffer's #293. Any issues w/ a 75w90?

2. Does anyone by chance know the torque specs for the diff cover? I have a torque wrench and i've heard 28-32ft pounds, but want to be sure.

This doesn't pertain to the topic, but also, anyone know the trans pan bolt specs?

It's 2wd, which I believe is 5r44e, same trans.

basically 11ftlbs for the trans and 16ftlbs for the diff

I'm surprised by the 16lbs on the diff, thought it would be higher. Oh, forgot to ask, threadlocker?

Your thoughts on the 75w90?

BTW, I really appreciate it, this helps me alot.

No thread locker needed at all. The trans pan gasket is reusable also so no need to purchase a new one.

75-90 REDLINE

75-90 is the way to go mike

Dont worry about the 16lbft. After that sealer dries it's not going anywhere I promise you. I have mangled my fair share of OE diff covers trying to remove them after using it. It's really a good time for a cover with a plug

I've contemplated getting a diff w/ a drain plug, maybe next time, I know it would be nice.

Sounds like I'm good then, I have:

-3qts Schaeffer's 75w90
-Torque Wrench
-Scraping tool
-The Right Stuff gasket maker

I still need to get some brake cleaner, other than that, sounds like that's all.

The answer to both of your questions is that it doesn't matter. 7.5s do fine with 80W90, 75W90, and 75W140. I have used them all. Don't worry about torquing the cover bolts down. Snug is fine.

Honestly, the hardest, most PITA part of the job is scraping the old gasket off.

Ok guys, finally got around to doing this today. It wasn't too bad, a bit hard getting the cover/gasket material off. As I expected, the fluid was a nasty grey color, and the magnet had quite a bit of shavings. 22,400 miles on the truck.


No leaks so far! I will keep an eye on it for a while.

One thing though: I measured how much came out, about 2.3-2.4qts. When I went to fill it up, I got 2qts in, then it started coming out of the fill hole. I noticed that the truck was on a "slight" grade, so I put it up on ramps. I got another .25qts before it came out again.

So, the amount that went in was just shy of what came out. That's not a problem is it?

Go drive it get it on level ground in a parking lot and then check it. After a complete drain from cover removal it way give a false fill to start.

it wouldn't suprise me if you need to add a little

Well, I took it for a drive. Went to Autozone and got some shop towels.

I parked it on a flat surface, when I removed the fill plug, it drizzled fluid out. I let it stop and then tried adding some more, it just came right back out?

Not sure why, my manual says 2.5qts or so, but there must have been some residual? Either way, I'm confident that it's full. I'll probably check it again in a week or so.
