Diff Friction Modifier: When is it really needed?

Really curious to see whether this axle is weak like the ones in the Explorers of similar vintage (had one at a former workplace that's now had the entire rear axle assembly replaced 3 times). Ford knows they are bad and need replacing regularly but doesn't offer any assistance with the parts or labor if even a thousand miles out of warranty and doesn't seem to have engineered a fix to date (at least not that's made it to Idaho dealers).

bulwnkl- Not sure really...I know the 8.8" in my '03 Ranger FX4 Level II hasn't given me any trouble...now, the driveshaft on the other hand is a completely different story.

Does anyone get the feeling the reason Ford is in trouble is because they've let the bean counters run the company instead of the engineers and enthusiasts?

I sure do...
