Diferential empty?!?

This reminds me of one of my trucks several years ago.

I replaced the gear oil with synthetic at around 140k miles and thought nothing more of it. That was until I hit 190k miles and lost the rear end on the HW. The shop opened it up and said I had no fluid left inside. I never saw a leak and they did not note any signs either. Even if it were a slow drip or seeping, I think I might have noticed.

I've always wondered where did the fluid go and how long did it run w/o any? Then I really started second guessing, like - did I even remember adding the fluid after the drain?!

Try to get the shop to reimburse you for a new differential. If it ever fails you will have the $$ to fix it.

Had a brand new S10 and after 500 miles found out the differential only had 25% of the fluid that was suppost to be in it. The dealership would not work with me and would not offer an extended warrenty. Traded it in at another dealership and found out the next owner had to file a complaint with GM because the differential failed at 2000 miles. I would not take the chance.

This has been the death of many 7h gen 1.6L equipped corolla's. Unlike their 1.8L counterparts the 1.6's had a separate diff. case.

I would drain what you just poured in there to see if any debris comes out.
