At 68 I'm only about 10 pounds heavier than my high school weight. All my life I've avoided processed foods, fast foods, soda pop, junk food, white flour, sugar and large amounts of red meat. I do eat a lot of seafood, limited amounts of red meat, grains, loads of fruits and vegetables and dairy. I work to keep nutrient dense, calorie light foods in my lifestyle.
With a well balanced diet you don't need supplements-leave them for people too lazy to eat right.
I still run almost every day, we bike several times a week (weather permitting), in the winter months we snowshoe and cross country ski the bike trails in the area. In the winter months I use my Bowflex, but don't in the summer since I spend so much time outdoors. Up until about 4 years ago I rode RAGBRAI every year-since I "retired" I'm too busy to take a week off.
I also make sure I sleep well every night and get between 7 and 8 hours of quality sleep. I wear earplugs, use a snore guard, and we maintain a sleep-friendly environment in the bedroom. I awake feeling great every morning, I don't take naps, and never feel tired until it's time for bed.
Much of my family is overweight, and I decided during my college years that I would not allow that to happen to me. It's actually quite easy once you make it a lifestyle rather than a "diet" or another temporary weight loss method. It's resulted in excellent health, no prescriptions, no high blood pressure, blood sugar exactly where it should be, and normal bad cholesterol/outstanding good cholesterol, and no need for any "supplements".
If you "diet" you are going to fail. Diets do not work. Changing your lifestyle and making a commitment to a healthy way of living will, but unfortunately too many people are too lazy to make a commitment and stick with it. Most people who lose weight are doomed to putting it back on, and when it returns it returns with a vengeance.
